Honing machine: construction, types and specifications

Honing is the finishing process of machining parts having holes, and runs solely on honing machines. In some cases, this process can be equated to grinding. The difference between the procedures lies only in that the honing can be processed exclusively holes with final withdrawal of the balls of the allowance.

Construction machines

As mentioned earlier, for this used honing machine, which by design is very similar to metal cutting machines of the second group (boring). The machine consists of a frame (base), a drive spindle device for machine control and installation details.

During the process, the workpiece remains stationary and only rotates the spindle, which fixed the honing head – a tool for processing holes. The spindle is made in such a way as to allow the tool to make both a translational (up and down) and rotational movement (around its axis). This design feature allows to treat the surface evenly to achieve the required roughness and precision manufactured hole.

Depending on designs and other technical specifications, honing machine may be:

• With horizontal and vertical location of the spindle;
• Single or duplex, and multi-spindle;
• For external and internal processing, and integrated (for internal and external treatment simultaneously);
• With mechanical (manual), semi-automatic and automatic (CNC).

The Most common models are: 3Г833, 3А833 (vertical-honing machines), SS 740В, CC 743 (honing machines), 3К833 (semi-automatic).

To select a honing machine for particular processing, it is necessary to consider the main characteristics of each of them. These include:

1. Accuracy Classes. All of them have five – from N (normal precision) to C (extremely high precision). Many models of honing machines produce N and h (normal and high) precision.
2. Dimensions processing. In this case – maximum and minimum diameter of the hole.
3. Length of treatment. This characteristic is taken into account only if the alleged the processed hole is too long.
4. Maximum stroke of the spindle. As in the previous case, is taken into account only when the length of the processed hole is too large.
5. The dimensions of the working surface of the table. This characteristic is taken into account only in the case if the workpiece is large.
6. The Speed of rotation of the spindle. This characteristic should be taken into account when must be drilled with high technological requirements. Because the speed of rotation of the spindle will depend on the final accuracy of the surface.
