But not only for its scenery and historic attractions known to southern coast of Crimea. Here is the world-famous factory for the production of wines.
Officially the year of Foundation of this company is considered to be 1894. It was then that, by decree of Nicholas II was built and started production the largest Russian Massandra winery with a storage equipped in the underground tunnels. But its history begins much earlier.
To Grow grapes and manufacture heady drinks in the Crimea began even before our era. Near the ancient Chersonesos, archaeologists found a stone stele erected in honor of a certain Auxila, thanked residents for its concern for the cultivation of grapes.

By the 19th century Massandra (Yalta), it becomes run-down village, and passes from one owner to another. The only significant structure at that time there is a cottage built by M. S. Smirnov, on the hillside, which in turn own and the Countess Potocka, and her daughter Olga Stanislavovna Naryshkin, and the counts Vorontsovs.
Massandra (Yalta) once again became a center of viticulture, when there came Mikhail S. Vorontsov. He had big plans of reorganization methods of farming in the Crimea. Unfortunately, after the death of Mikhail Sergeyevich successors showed no interest in continuing with the case. In 1889, the Vorontsov estate, which included the Massandra (winery and estate), Livadia and AI-Danil, was acquired by the Imperial Appanage Department.
As is known, Nicholas II had a great love for Yalta and sought to develop agriculture and to produce wines that is not inferior to foreign. By his order arrives in Massandra Prince L. S. Golitsyn. At that time he was the lead winemaker of the Russian Empire and had already experience in the Crimea.
He greatly increased the area of Massandra vineyards, and for aging of the finished product ordered to build a special cellar, which took the form of tunnels. And the vault was designed so that it naturally all year round preserved temperature 12-14 degrees Celsius. It is optimal for aging beverages of the best quality.
At the same time began to build the Massandra winery by architect A. I. Dietrich.
At the end of August 1898 was officially started production on the huge industrial complex. It includes the Massandra winery and cellar, designed to hold 250 thousand gallons of cask wine and 1 million bottles. In 1900, the best product samples of the enterprise was presented at the world exhibition in Paris. When a few months later, Nicholas II and his wife came to inspect his new Palace in Livadia, Golitsyn suggested the Royal couple to try Massandra wines. The Emperor especially liked the port "Livadia" and Queen — “Aleatico Ayu-Dag”. Since then, both the drink began to put on the table of the Romanovs.
Plant "Massandra" continued to thrive after the October revolution. Moreover, its basement was turned into a gallery of the best wines of the Crimea, and there were brought many private collections.
However, over time the building, which housed the factory "Massandra" of dilapidated and obsolete equipment. In 1937 work was begun on the reconstruction and expansion of old plants. In addition, it was initiated the construction of a new plant. During the war the work was suspended, and reconstruction was finally completed in 1956.
Thankenterprises "Massandra" (the winery) is inextricably linked with the name of academician Alexander Alexandrovich Yegorov, who worked as chief winemaker of the enterprise for 33 years. He is the author of the famous brands: nutmeg “Red Stone” and “Pinot Gris AI-Danil”.
In the 80-ies of the last century over the Massandra vineyards under threat of destruction due to too actively conducted anti-alcohol campaign. Even assumed to cut down some of them and use the vacated land for other purposes. Fortunately, the company defended Vladimir Shcherbitsky, who was then first Secretary of the Crimean obkom.
The Legendary plant continued to work. Moreover, in 1988 the Guinness book of world records has a record that the place where the most unique and large collection of wines, — Crimea, Massandra winery.
Currently in stock production Association "Massandra" contains more than 250 brands of wine, including gift and collectible. Mainly (about 80%) is a liqueur, fortified wines and strong dessert drinks. Among them, the first winery boasts a “Annex” — wine "Kagor Partenit”. During the existence of the plant a drink of Massandra in various competitions held in the Soviet Union, in Ukraine and in other countries, and received 200 gold and silver medals. The number of awards has not one firm for the production of wine.
