Construction of the Lytkarino optical glass factory began 01.10.1933. The original goal of the enterprise was the production of mirror reflectors five-foot diameter, used in projector systems. The first anti-aircraft reflectors for floodlights was made in 1939.
In the USSR there was no such technology. The factory engineers had to develop the process technology. First Gorshkov furnaces smelted a heat-resistant glass of high transparency. Then it was made into billets, which gave a parabolic shape according to the specified parameters. At the final stage the surface is covered with a reflective coating.
Since the beginning of the war, the Lytkarino optical glass factory were evacuated. However, in early 1942, on its site partly restored the production of reflectors. In addition, the factory workers began to produce observation instruments for armored vehicles and armored glass for domestic aircraft series La-6, Yak-1, Il-2.

In the late 60-ies dramatically increased the need of enterprises opto-mechanical profile in the optical glass of high quality. This contributed to intensive development of the space industry, the improvement of military equipment, means of surveillance and control. 30.03.1970 was created AT the “ruby”, the main enterprise which is LZOS. The newly formed industrial Association requested to expedite research and to increase the production of optical glasses for various purposes. Following years «Rubin» built branches in the Russian Federation (Yoshkar-Ola), USSR (Feodosiya), BSSR (Minsk).
07.06.94 year the enterprise was transformed into JSC “Lytkarino optical glass factory”. It since 2011, becomes the head area of the Centre of competence for development, production and processing of optical materials. After the collapse of the Soviet Union of the fields of raw materials required for smelting high-quality glass has appeared in neighboring countries. However, the factory managed to restore the relations, of the minerals purchased in foreign countries.
Technological capacity of the plant allows to produce all existing brands of optical glasses used in domestic industry. Any enterprise of the Russian Federation does not have such capabilities.
