The construction of "Akkuyu" NPP in Turkey. The origins and fate of the project

In recent years, relations between Russia and Turkey, being until November 2015 warm and friendly, deteriorated sharply. The reason for this was the questionable decision by the Turkish government towards the Russian bomber su-24. Initially excited, the Russian authorities expressed the intention to hard freeze all joint projects, such as «Turkish stream» and the construction of a nuclear power plant «Akkuyu” in Turkey, however over time it became clear that Turkey imposed sanctions do not include similar steps. If «Turkish stream» very often you can hear from the news or read in the Newspapers about the nuclear power plant «Akkuyu” in the media a few less. What is this project and how did this big idea?

The First official news about the project appeared on 13 January 2010: Deputy Chairman of RF government Igor Sechin and Minister of energy and natural resources of Turkish Republic Taner Yildiz announced the beginning of joint work on the construction of a nuclear power plant on the southern coast of Turkey, in Mersin province. “Akkuyu" of the NPP, thus, became the largest at that time confirmed a joint project of Russia and Turkey. Were later identified and named the project participants: JSC "Atomenergoproekt" (General designer), JSC "ASE" (General contractor), JSC «Rosenergoatom Concern” (technical customer) and JSC Akkuyu NPP (the General customer and investor). Also, the project involves the NRC "Kurchatov Institute", acting as scientific adviser, and ‘Inter-WorleyParsons" consultant on licensing issues.

Main characteristics of the planned nuclear power plant «Akkuyu”

What is nuclear power, which since 2011 and to this day raise up of Turkish and Russian specialists? “Akkuyu" (NPPs) are designed chetyrehbalnoy, with a total output capacity of 4800 megawatts. Type of nuclear reactors that will be used at the station, was chosen VVER-1200 – with a project of this type of reactors, Russia won the tender for the construction of nuclear power plant «Akkuyu”. The introduction of the first power unit into operation in 2020, the second – by 2021, the third and fourth, respectively, in 2022 and 2023.

The Attitude of the local population to the construction of nuclear power plants

The Akkuyu Site (tour. ak kuyu – “white well”) on which work is underway on the construction of a nuclear power plant, located relatively close to settlements and Mersin Buyukeceli. Not all the locals appreciated the initiative of the two countries on construction of a nuclear power plant «Akkuyu”. The NPP, in their opinion, may have a negative impact on the environment and on their health. Those who heard about the nuclear disasters in Chernobyl and nuclear power plant «Fukushima”, even more fiercely opposed the development of the project. For the populations of nearby towns did not become a victim of misinformation in Mersin and Buyukeceli will soon begin the work of information centers that will not only cover citizens of Turkey, the project itself, but will tell more about the advantages of nuclear energy.

Still hard to say whether it will be in 2020 put into operation at least one nuclear reactor "Akkuyu”. Turkey intends to develop cooperation with Russia on important joint projects, but relations between the two countries are still tense – announced sanctions came into effect, the question of repeal is not. However, both Turkish and Russian media in one voice say about the gradual warming of relations, and the absence of any claim on current major projects. Work on construction of the NPP do not stop, which means a high probability of execution of plan on time.
