Solovetsky uprising, which took place from 1668 to 1676 for today is one of the most remarkable events in Russian history. The uprising was organized by monks who refused the innovations of Patriarch Nikon.

Solovki uprising: the causes

For starters, it is worth noting that the Solovetsky monastery in the early 17th century became an important military facility in connection with the Russo-Swedish war. After all, his building was well fortified, which allowed to protect the earth from invading enemies. In addition, every person who lived in the monastery or near it, was armed and well trained to defend themselves from attack. By the way, at that time the population was 425 people. And in case of a siege of the Swedish troops were kept in the monastery a huge amount of victuals.

The First discontent of the clergy was caused by the reform of Patriarch Nikon, who condemned the old believers. In 1636 Solovetsky monastery were sent a whole batch of new, revised according to the reform, books on worship. But the monks, not even looking at the books, sealed in trunks and sent for storage in the Armory. This was the first expression of dissatisfaction with the governments.

It Should also be recalled that the beginning of the 17th century was accompanied by constant mass uprisings against the government and innovation. It was a very turbulent time, when even the smallest change could turn into a real rebellion. And the Solovetsky uprising was no exception from the General laws. Some historians have tried to make the revolt of the monks as the resistance of the ignorant churchmen and adherents of the old faith.

Solovetsky uprising and fighting

In fact, in the rebellion were not only monks of the Solovetsky monastery. They were joined by runaway soldiers, disgruntled peasants and the supporters of Stepan Razin. After this replenishment, the rebellion has already acquired a certain political significance.

It is Worth noting that the first few years of virtually no military action had been taken. The king hoped for a peaceful solution to such a delicate issue. For example, government troops moved to the Solovetsky Islands only in the summer. For several months they tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to block communication of the rebel monks to the mainland. As soon as it became cold, the troops moved in Sumy jail. It is interesting that most of the archers were simply dismissed on houses. This relatively peaceful situation was maintained until 1674.

In 1674, the government revealed that behind the walls of the monastery are the tanners, sundresses and other brothers-in-arms Razin. Since then started the real attack, which was accompanied by the victims. The government allowed active fighting, including bombardment of the walls of the monastery.

And in December 1675, the monks took a decision to no longer pray for the king. This “innovation” like not all the rebels, so some of them had to sign at the time in a monastery prison.

Solovki uprising: end

Despite the constant, round-the-clock siege of the mines and shelling, government troops did not manage to penetrate the walls of the monastery. In January 1677, the rebels left the monk Theoktistos, who immediately went to the king's troops. He said, as to sneak inside the monastery.

The Night of the first of February, fifty archers quietly entered through a secret hole (window for carrying water) in the drying room of the monastery. Then the soldiers opened the gates and let the rest of the troops.

In the courtyard of the 30 rebels tried to repel the attack, but to no avail — the fight was unequal. Interestingly, to this day behind the walls of the monastery of the monks is almost gone — some of them left the house voluntarily, some were banished. Several priests have been jailed at the monastery — they were released by government forces.

Thus, the Solovki uprising stopped. In the result it was executed about 30 of the rebels, and the rest were sent to prison.
