Thomas Torquemada – one of the most famous inquisitors of the Catholic Church. Even today his name is mentioned with a share of fear, as the acts committed by him is truly terrible. And yet many believe that he joined together the rival of Spain, thus making her the most influential country of that time. So, who actually was a Black Inquisitor: fervent fanatic or a prudent politician?
On 16 November 1414, in the family of a Catholic priest, John of Torquemada, a boy was born. Looking ahead, it should be noted that in the veins of little Thomas was the Jewish blood, let them mixing with the Spanish. However, in the future the Grand Inquisitor would deny any statement that has the slightest kinship with the “God” people.
Because Of the high position of the father of the family of Catholics could live quite wealthy life. Due to this, Thomas was able to get a good education, which has helped him in solving difficult problems. Naturally, the best young man versed in the Catholic canons, as he explained to their father and uncle.
By the way, brother John Huang was at least a known identity. Through his faith and knowledge he was able to promoted to the rank of cardinal. His hand was written more than a dozen theological texts that served as the basis for teaching theology.
Despite the deep faith and traditions of the family, Thomas Torquemada did not immediately become a priest. Upon reaching adulthood, he went to travel around Europe in hope to find their calling. Most of all he resented the fact that his country could not rise from his knees and Shine with greatness. Even then, the young Torquemada wondered how you can change the current situation.

But much more important is that in this period the young man met his first love. History is silent about, what was the name of a beautiful girl who stole the heart of a future Inquisitor, but it is another known fact. It was unrequited love: young lady not only did not pay attention to the attentions of Thomas, but also married to the moor. This betrayal will forever affect the Outlook of the Inquisitor and his future plans.
A Failure on the love front has led to the fact that Thomas Torquemada decides to leave Spain and settle in Italy. This choice was quite obvious, as in this country was the heart of the Catholic faith. However, on the way to Rome something happened that forever changed the fate of Thomas, and with it the history of mankind.
So, staying the night in Zaragoza, Torquemada has witnessed a violent dispute between the Dominicans and the common people. The heart of a young theologian did not allow him to remain on the sidelines, and he made an eloquent speech, confirming the arguments of the fathers of the Church. Inspired by his talent, the Dominicans suggested that Thomas would join their order. But the future Inquisitor refused to serve their ideals and continued on his way.
However, some time later, Thomas Torquemada was a convert, and still joined one of the Dominican orders. It is notable that on the banner of his monastery was a picture of a dog carrying in its mouth a burning torch. Years later, this symbol will be the basis for the metaphor of “dogs of the Lord”, denoting the most fanatical followers of the Church.
As for Thomas of Torquemada, he was a very gifted man. His sermons and teachings have charmed the people, causing unquestioningly obey the will of the priest. Thanks to this newly minted monk very quickly moved up the spiritual ladder. And in 1459 he was elected prior at the monastery of Santa Cruz La real.
As Abbot of the monastery, Thomas Torquemada becomes the spiritual mentor of Isabella of Castile, the legitimate heiress to the throne of Castile and Leon. And here, under the strict supervision of the cleric, a young virgin becomes one of the most devoted followers of the Catholic Church.
Moreover, in late 1969 Torquemada helps Isabella to the throne, secretly hoops her second cousin Ferdinand of Aragon. And after his parents died, the couple had acquired power over the entire territory of Spain, effectively combining it into one state.
Officially, the Inquisition existed in Spain from 1232. However, its impact was so minor that local residents with her simply were not considered. Thomas Torquemada considered this situation inappropriate, and therefore decided to take the grooves of the Board into their own hands. But for this he needed the permission of Pope Sixtus IV.
To Request this directly was too reckless act. So Torquemada asks for help to Isabella I of Castile. Given all of the past services of the priest, the Queen gladly agreed to help his patron. And so, in 1478, a special order of Pope Sixtus IV, Spain based private Tribunal of the Holy office of the Inquisition. But in 1483Thomas Torquemada became its official leader.
Initially the Grand Inquisitor showed himself as very discreet a ruler. But very soon, his madness broke out. It all started with the fact that he gave a set of the Talmud, which described in detail who the true Christian and who merely hides behind the guise of faith.
At the same time all heretics were expecting one event – torture. Under their pressure, thousands of people would admit that he actually did not commit. And if at first these measures were only applied to the Christians, soon the Inquisition moved on to Jews and Muslims. Thus they were forced to renounce their own faith, and the alternative was death. Ultimately, “dogs of the Lord” was able to expel from their lands the majority of other faiths, and those who remained were forced to accept Christianity and to live in constant fear for their lives.
And yet, who in the annals of history was Thomas Torquemada? Quotes taken from Chronicles of the time describe it as an ambitious and murderous leader, plunging Spain into an abyss of horror. According to the Chronicles, he was burned at the stake more than 8 thousand people, not to mention how many souls were ruined in the basement of the Inquisition.
However, historians, in addition to the killer, see it as a brilliant politician. Because through his actions of Spain from a backward country has become a real economic giant. Moreover, in that period, was sent to the first marine expedition which has discovered a New world.
As for the Grand Inquisitor, he died all alone. Until the last day he was afraid that somebody would slit his throat, and kept away from people.
