Soil Characteristics to determine their values is impossible without studying the soil profiles. What is it, and what types of profiles are, read the article.

Soil profile

The Process of formation of soils impacts on mountain parent rock, resulting in soil properties vary vertically. It is a natural change in the composition of the soil from its surface down to the parent rock that did not affect the formation of soils. It happens gradually. Soil profiles formed under the influence of some factors. The main ones are:

Soil profiles

  • Substance that enters vertically into the soil from the atmosphere or from ground water. Their movement depends on the formation of soils and their turnover by year and seasons.
  • The vertical Distribution of root systems of plants, soil dwelling animals and microorganisms.

All the horizons of soil profile are interrelated. It so happens that the soil horizons of different types have similar properties and characteristics.

Soil profiles: structure

The soil Layers alternating vertically, are the soil horizons. Their structure and properties differ. Soil horizons, consistently lying to each other – soil profiles. Structure for each soil-specific.

The Structure of the soil profile is closely linked to the process of natural formation of soils and their use in agriculture. Soil horizons of different types differ not only in characteristics and properties, but also the composition. The thickness of this horizon is determined by the vertical length. Major horizons:

Features of the soil profile

  • The Humus layer of the soil.
  • The Horizon of transition from the previous to the next layer.
  • Subsoil (parent material).

Simple profile

The Structure of the soil profile however, a closer examination is simple and complex. A simple structure of the soil has the following profile types:

the Structure of the soil profile

  • Primitive – a low-power horizon, the place of application is the parent breed.
  • Incompletely developed – as part of this profile has all the horizons, characteristic of this soil. Each layer are thin.
  • Normal – is characterized by the presence of all horizons formed at the genetic level. The power inherent erodirovannoj the soil.
  • Poorly differentiated – horizons poorly allocated.
  • Broken or eroded – characterized by destruction of the upper horizons by erosion.

Advanced profiles

The Types of the soil profile of the complex structure are the following:

  • Relic – the presence of this profile, there are buried a horizons and profiles of paleo soil. In its composition can have traces of the ancient formation of soils.

Types of soil profile

  • Profile polynomial – is formed by lithological changes, within strata of the soil.
  • Polycyclic – its formation is associated with periodic deposition of materials that form the soil: volcanic ash and river alluvium, sediments and ash.
  • Broken or inverted – characterized by the formation of different types: natural or artificial. In the first case, played the role of the human factor, in the second – natural when the underlying horizons, has moved to the surface.
  • Mosaic – is not consistent with the formation of horizons in depth. Change of horizons occurs spots, like a mosaic pattern.

Structure of a profile according to the conditions of formation of soils

Soil profiles vary. Depending on the formation of soils, they are divided into two types:

  • The First type is characterized by the formation of soils in terms of their washing, which are referred to as eluvial, and the influence of moisture from the atmosphere. Precipitation, reaching downward flow from the soil, move particles and chemical elements down.
  • Description of the soil profile of the second type has its own characteristics. This type of structure is typical for hydromorphic soils, which are formed when excess moisture. The formation of soils influenced by groundwater, which is the enrichment of the soil column.

The structure of the profiles in depth

Depending on the distribution of various substances: limestone, humus, gypsum, minerals, salts, in depth we can distinguish the following soil profiles:

  • Accumulative – the top soil contains small amounts of substances: the deeper, the less they become.
  • Eluvial – the number of substances increases with depth.
  • Soil-accumulative-accumulate substances from ground water, which are located at the bottom or in the middle of the profile.
  • Eluvial-differentiated – in the upper layer accumulates little substances, and in other layers – a lot.
  • Undifferentiated – substances are distributed evenly throughout the profile.

Horizons profile

In addition to the three main there are such horizons as:

  • Peat, organic. Its formation occurs on the surface at a constant excess moisture. A characteristic feature is the preservation of the peculiar substances of organic origin, which do not turn into humus and not burn. The composition of the peat isherbal, woody, moss, lichen, deciduous or mixed. Residues of plant origin can not be decomposed, partially preserved and laid out fully.

Horizons of a soil profile

  • The litter of the forest – this layer is rich in organic matter. Its capacity can reach twenty inches. Consists of residues of plants, preserved original form, partially or completely rotted.
  • Sod layer – the surface horizon. Its formation occurs under herbaceous plants. A large part of the volume is represented by the roots of plants.
  • Humus horizon – contains 15-35 percent organic substances. May be structureless or have curdled structure. The soil is black, the spotting is saturated with water.
  • Arable Horizon – its formation is associated with the processing of humus or of underlying layers.
  • Horizon humus – is formed on the surface, has a dark color, contains 15% organic matter.
  • The eluvial Horizon – is formed under the organogenic horizon. The soil is whitish, bleached.
  • Horizon mineral – the place of its formation – the middle part of the profile. Can be illuvial, sodic, carbonate, salt, gypsum, or mixed.
  • Horizon Peavy – it is called the mineral. Formation occurs during long-term or permanent excessive moisture and lack of oxygen. Characteristic of the horizon is a dull color. It can be blue, bluish or olive tints.
  • Maternal breed – is characterized by weak degree of influence of destructive factors in the formation of soils.

Soil Color

Soil horizons characteristic of such a symptom as their color, which depends on the composition of the soil and processes of its formation.

  • Black soil. The name of the color received is dark gray and dark brown soils. Their color depends on the content of humus or humus. The more it in the soil, the darker the color. The black color of the soil can give the links of some of the minerals and coal of different origin.
  • White soil and all other colors of light tones. This color gives the soil limestone, gypsum, quartz, soluble salts, feldspar.
  • Red soil is when its part of the accumulated iron oxide. Purple coloration is due to the high content of oxides of manganese, yellow – the hydroxides of iron.
  • Soil with different shades of blue and green colors. This is due to the fact that the soil contains compounds of iron, ferrous. Its content in the soil – the effect of anaerobic conditions (excessive moisture).

What is the thickness of this horizon?

Is its length vertically from the surface down to depth of bedrock. Different soil types have different capacity. On average, it ranges from forty to one hundred fifty centimeters. For example, if the natural conditions are harsh, the process of the formation of the soil affects the upper part of the rocks. The capacity of such soil is twenty to thirty centimeters. In steppe zones under dense herbaceous cover – two or three hundred.

According to the power of individual horizons is judged on the value of the soil. So powerful humus layer is characterized by a large supply of substances and weak leaching. Podzol soils are poor in nutrients, so they are of little value.

Black earth

This is the most fertile soil. Black soil has in the past been formed of a dense grass cover, which die out annually, and under the influence of the warm summer decompose, forming humus, which is a long time to accumulate. At present, almost entirely black soil under cultivation. The soil profile of topsoil has the following structure:

Soil profile soil

  • Felt the steppe, the capacity of 3-4 cm.
  • Sod – its capacity is from 3 to 7 centimeters. Has a dark gray color and dead or living remnants of the roots of cereal plants. This layer can have long-arable or virgin soil.
  • Humus horizon – its capacity 35-120 cm. It has a dark grey uniform paint. Features of the soil profile of topsoil in its structure. It is grainy and durable. Main feature – fertility.
  • A Transitional horizon of the humus layer to the next. Its capacity 40-80 inches, the color-brownish-gray, heterogeneous, visible spots and streaks of humus. Has a rough, lumpy structure.
  • This type of horizon has subtypes. Some of them are illuvial-carbonate horizon with a brownish-yellow color and prismatic structure. Soil horizon just have a wormhole. They filled the brown mass coming from the horizon, lying below. It happens that the wormhole is filled with dark ground color of the upper layers.
  • Rock, forming soil. It has whitish or pale yellow in color and prismatic structure. The soil of different depths is characterized by the presence of carbonate, salts, gypsum.

Podzolic

The Soil profile is podzolic soils formed at high levels of humidity. Typical of these is the vegetation of various kinds. Features of the soil profile podzol soil acidity. So their microflora is very important to adapt in these conditions to participate in the processes of decomposition of residues of organic substances. The horizons of the podzolic profilesoils the following:

Soil profile podzol soils

  • Forest litter-the power of two centimeters.
  • Poorly decomposed plant remains.
  • Inclusion in the form of mycelium. The color of the soil is light brown.
  • Lumpy or powdery soil with dark brown color.
  • Humus-accumulative layer capacity to thirty centimeters.
  • Podzol layer with the same capacity.
  • Transition with variegated coloration layer capacity of up to fifty centimeters.
  • Illuvial layer, its power – 20-120 cm.
  • The Layer of parent rock.

The Soil of this type in the wild have low fertility, the humus layer is virtually absent, the soil reaction is acidic. Podzols do not absorb moisture, a little full of nutrients that affect plant nutrition and growth.
