The big question: "Why have banned potassium permanganate?"

Before almost every house in the kit was stored in glass vials filled with tiny black crystals – permanganate of potassium, in common parlance – potassium permanganate. This salt is known in pharmacology for its antiseptic properties, as well as the ability to decontaminate many poisons and to purify water.

The Range of application of potassium permanganate at home always been wide enough. It treated wounds, treating ulcers, a gastric lavage in case of poisoning, using a weak solution of purified drinking water. And then suddenly in pharmacies stopped selling this useful product. As it turned out, potassium permanganate banned by the government of the Russian Federation since 2007. This year's example of a neighbor was followed by Ukraine.

Why banned potassium permanganate? More precisely, it is not banned but severely restricted the sale to pharmacies – now potassium permanganate is possible to buy only in public pharmaceutical companies and only with a doctor's prescription. It turned out, for several reasons, and they lie in the properties of the substance.

The First reason why banned potassium permanganate, became her explosive ability. This salt of potassium has a specific property: when heated, and even at room temperature, being a strong oxidant, it reacts to the influence of such reducing agents as sucrose, tannin, glycerin, and the reaction is observed in the interaction with the powders of active metals – calcium, magnesium, aluminum. When such a chemical reaction is self-heating and spontaneous ignition of the substance (up to explosion). That's why they banned the sale of potassium permanganate. The cause is the fight against terrorist activities. That is familiar from childhood with the potassium permanganate – one of the substances used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices.
