In General, for the whole of the UK has its own unique culture, traditions and symbolism. The same can be said about the Principality of Wales, because it is an integral part of it. It is impossible not to mention the fact that very popular all over the region for centuries was the use of the attributes of dragons. The flag of Wales, photos of which are below, was no exception.

Image and color

flag of Wales

Currently, the Welsh national symbol is a fabric with horizontal stripes of white and green, which caused the red dragon. In a literal translation from the Welsh language name of the flag is translated – “Red dragon". Despite the fact that it was officially recognized in 1959, this symbol of the locals began to use in the days of the Roman Empire. Many monarchs are very impressed also and the combination of these colors.

The First official references

The Flag of Wales for the first time officially mentioned in literature in the year 1200. This manuscript became the legend “Lid and Levels”, which talked about how Britain could get rid of two dragons that fought each other all the time. Suffer from it all the inhabitants of the state. According to legend, the people dug a pit which was then filled with honey. She lured the dragons that got drunk and fell asleep, and then right there was buried. Some time later they managed to escape, and the fight continued. In the end the red dragon was stronger and killed white. In the first, the Welsh saw Royal subjects, and in the second – of the Saxons (the people that at that time seized many Islands). It was considered a very good mark, so red dragon and has appeared on national character. However, this is just a legend.

Origins

As of today there is no officially recognized versions of the flag of Wales. A Welsh researchers suggest that the scarlet dragon since ancient times, symbolizes the ancient warriors. Despite this, most historians claim that this logo was brought to the British Isles in the time of their conquest by the Romans. As for the combinations on the cloth green and white color, this combination was first used by Welsh Prince Leveling, and later was used by the Tudor dynasty.Flag of Wales photo

History of changes

Throughout its history, the flag of Wales has repeatedly partially modified. For example, as of 1807 the red dragon on the national symbol was located on a green hill, which is on a white field. Over a century later, in 1953, the so-called neighborhood was replaced by a field of green and white. He was struck with a crown shield and still the same dragon.

Coat of Arms

As of today in Wales there is no formal existing emblem. Its role in the country has the Royal sign, which was approved at the legislative level. It is used in all local laws and regulations. The sign is made in the form divided into four fields of the shield. Each of them are images of lions. Two of them are on a red field, and the same – Golden.

Unofficial symbols

As in many other States, not only the emblem and flag of Wales is the national symbol of the country. In addition to these, people came up with for myself, here is another unofficial symbol. Those in the Principality considered to be the leeks. There are two versions of why this plant was chosen by the Welsh. According to the first, during a protracted warrior residents fastened it to your hat. This allowed us to prevent the killings of colleagues and to obtain victory in battle. There is another version. According to her, in times of famine the Welsh did not remain anything else how to eat this plant. However, many residents have noted its excellent nutritional and taste qualities.

Despite this, the majority of Welsh as its unofficial symbol is called daffodil. The fact that it begins to bloom on the Day of St. David. However, this does not prevent the local people even in this day to wear a sprig of leek.

Paradox

During the whole period of development of the country, the flag of Wales (pictures and photos from different eras are a case in point) has undergone minor changes. The untouchables remained only primary colors and a dragon. Similar experiments were brought to an end in 1959 when the flag was officially recognized. Despiteit, Wales is the only representative of great Britain, whose symbol is missing on the flag of the United Kingdom. This paradox is a cause of the abundance of criticism and disturbances of the region's residents.
