Prerequisite to the beginning of construction of the Cathedral began to appear in the late nineteenth century, when the island of Kotlin already acquired the status of colonized: by this time were built the port, shipyards, docks, military base. But seriously the temple, which symbolized the faith and piety of the Russian army, so still was not.
Of Course, the Orthodox Church existed. But, in comparison to the adjacent Lutheran Shrine, was so clumsy that the main supporter of the construction of the new temple and the donor Archpriest John of Kronstadt constantly blamed for this shit. According to him, it was possible some of the failures of Russia in the military naval field. In addition, the majestic Church would be guarded and defended Russia from the encroachments of foreigners, as the temple is equivalent to the same ship, which is controlled by the Lord.
In 1896, through the efforts of one of the initiators, Vice Admiral and commander of the port of Kronstadt N. I. Kazakov, work was started on designing the future of St. Nicholas Cathedral. Coupled with their intended purpose, the temple was also to perpetuate the memory of prominent naval officers and officials killed in the line of duty.
In 1897, was declared an international competition for the design of facilities and appointed a Committee to collect donations for the construction. The money was handed over and the members of the Royal family, and ordinary citizens, and officials belonging to the Navy Department. By the way, the last in 1898, were obliged to deduct 0.25% of the entire salary until 1914.

In July, 1899, Nicholas II was already approved project has not previously participated in the competitions A. I. Tomishko, but the construction Committee opposed this and eventually the development requested V. A. Kosyakova. A few years earlier, the architect has already built two similar to the theme of the temple.
In 1901, V. A. Kosyakov presented a special military meeting two sketches, one of which was finally approved and Nicholas II, and the Committee. Future Naval Cathedral (Kronstadt) for this project largely followed the lines of Constantinople, St. Sofia.
The place for the building of the Naval Cathedral was chosen in 1898. They became the Anchor area because of their following features:
- this cut was the center of the city;
the place had a certain hill, and were protected from the floods;
according to the plan, Nikolsky Cathedral, is located here, could be observed from all points in the channel.
- extensive Playground in front of the temple would have served as a marching ground for parades, marine forces;
- dimensions of the square just large enough for a huge Cathedral.
In 1901, after the user has been allocated funds for the construction of the temple, on the Anchor square was held a prayer service. The ground was consecrated by John of Kronstadt. Engineering service of the latter has made a significant contribution to the preservation of the technical characteristics of the structure. Regular maintenance has helped to save the Church and communication from the decay and utter ruin.
With the advent of the fascist troops on the dome of the Naval Cathedral was equipped with observation platform. It functioned until the lifting of the blockade. Despite all the efforts of the citizens during the war, the temple got a few shells, the holes of which are subsequently removed, and the inside of the building was repaired.
At the end of hostilities had a new idea: to equip in the Maritime Cathedral and concert hall. As a result of major construction works was equipped with a suspended ceiling, balcony, stage and wall partitions. Alteration of the premises was produced until 1954, and it resulted in a violation of the integrity of the walls of the temple – it has gone numerous cracks. In February 1955 the hall was inaugurated. Here were parties, concerts and various entertainment events. The exterior of the buildings are prevalent elements in the Romanesque style. The facade is faced with light brick, columns, portals and arches in relief, with the addition of multiple decorative elements and ornaments. Despite the massive and impressive size of the structure, due to the numerous ornaments, it does not create a sense of awkwardness.
The Portal above the main entrance portal is decorated with mosaic images of angels and a quotation from Psalm 112 "From the East to the West hvalno the name of the Lord!” the sides there are two bell tower with its gilded arches and icons on the front.
The Main decoration Naval Cathedral is, of course, its main dome. Bright, huge, richly decorated with Golden anchors, resting on the “reel” of the many Windows, it creates a truly magnificent experience.

Inside the temple is striking in true glory: a giant space full of mosaics made in the Byzantine style. The interior includes numerous images of fish, seaweed, seahorses, ships. Special attention deserves the iconostasis and stained the canvas size of 52 square meters each.
It is Impossible to ignore and black marble plaques with the names of the dead sailors-all were rescued and to recover from oblivion. They are located around the perimeter of St. Nicholas Cathedral are its main feature.
In the prayer building has three altars consecrated in honor of Nicholas, and Peter and Paul and St. John. They are located in West portal.
