The Belarusian nuclear power plant: the first unit is planned for 2018

The Structure of the power industry of the Republic of Belarus provides for the import of electricity from Lithuania, Latvia and Russia. By 2020, when it will be withdrawn in the working power of the Belarusian NPP, the situation must change.

Historical background

The Belarusian power engineering was developed within the framework of a unified system of receiving and distribution of power in the USSR. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Belarus has not built a single native object. Carried out modernization of all previously operated.

Diplomatic decisions and official documents

The Republic has returned to the issue of building a nuclear power plant only in the 21st century.

In 2006, experts determined the area under the atomic object – Grodno region, 18 km from the village of astravyets. The Belarusian nuclear power plant because of huge investments could not be built by the forces of the Republic. Therefore, participation in the construction were invited by three countries: Russia, China and the United States.

During the negotiations on the review of the participation of the United States and China in the project, the Russian side expressed its disapproval of the matter in the favor of third countries. The result is “diplomatic auction” for five years (2006 to 2011) Russia allocates the credit in 10 billion dollars for the construction of nuclear power plants. The problem was finally closed through direct negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko in March 2011. Then also announced that Russia has agreed with Belarus about the requirement of open bidding for procurement of equipment for nuclear power plants.

Construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant

Excavation began in late 2011. The process started after the signing of the President of Belarus Decree No. 499 “On the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant” where the contractor was determined – ZAO “ASE" (the Russian company Rosatom in the composition).

Suppliers of equipment are defined in the course of open bidding. Naturally, some of them won enterprises of Belarus. The share of local supply is 7.9%.

The most Successful in this respect – enterprises of Russia. The part of the tender won by Ukraine (for example, EMSS already put blanks for the main circulation pump).

To date, mastered 15% of the funding, installed 36% of rebar and placed 35% of the concrete (April 2015).

What will be the Belarusian nuclear power plant (photos)

The station will be two blocks with the VVER-1200/491, the electric power of each of them – 1150 MW (with a coefficient of installed capacity use of 92%). The duration of operation of the reactor between batches of fuel – two years.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant will operate on Russian fuel. Issues of nuclear waste disposal will be engaged in Russia.

According to the power generated by the nuclear power plant, Belarus will be the twelfth of the eighteen countries in Europe in which to operate a nuclear power plant.

Security for the Belarusian nuclear power plant

The Station is built on the model of Russian project "NPP-2006" (it has improved technical and economic indicators of the third generation of nuclear power stations).

The Project provides for implementation of all IAEA recommendations on protection from earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, even from a direct hit by a plane. Feature of this nuclear power plant will be the creation of additional passive safety systems (without human assistance) in combination with traditional one. The Belarusian nuclear power plant will be equipped with a unique facility – a trap of molten nuclear fuel. This is the only invention in the world of this level: none of the existing NPP has no such protection.

Personnel for nuclear energy of Belarus

When the station is planned for 2018, and the frames are being prepared right now. As the Belarusian NPP is based on the Russian version of existing reactors, future professionals receive training at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant. In the Ural Federal University (Ekaterinburg) from 1 September 2015, the first 20 Belarusian students will study in the bachelor.
