Blueing steel

Bluing of steel – the chemical process used to produce on the surface of steel parts with a thin protective film of iron oxide Fe3O4. The name derives from the typical colour of the part after processing (blue-black, Raven), also has the name "blackening" or "bluing" in General, regardless of color – "oxidation". The resulting film passivate the surface and protect the part from atmospheric corrosion and exposure to other corrosive environments.

Before you make burnished steel, detail pre-prepare, clean rust mechanically polished, degreased and etched in an acidic solution. You can degrease with solvent or alcohol. The Etchant is needed to remove from the surface all the extra oxide, leaving bare metal.

The easiest way – bluing steel with oil. There are different methods, but the point is simple: the part is applied a thin layer of oil, after which it must be heated to 300-350°C. Oil obgorite leaves on the surface oxide film. The first time a uniform coating is not obtained, so the process is repeated to achieve the desired result. It is important to achieve uniform heating, otherwise the film will be stained and not to overheat the part, as it may deform or loosen. Many make the mistake and put the hot part in oil, this is wrong. You need exactly the opposite: first the smear, then to warm. Use any oil, from the sunflower to the transmission or engine. This blueing of the steel has a low strength of the coating. It is only good for decorative and protective purposes.
