In modern historiography known as the eighty years ' war, Eighty years war (1568 - 1648) – fighting the Seventeen provinces (a personal Union of States in the Lower countries) for independence against the mightiest in Europe, the Spanish Empire under king Philip II.

We are not Talking about a long war. Throughout the 80 years it manifested itself in many separate revolts, also periods of many years truce (1609-1621). The struggle for independence led to the separation of the North and South of the Netherlands and the formation of the Republic of the United provinces of the Netherlands.

The Most generally accepted opinion is that the Dutch revolution began with the looting of churches and convents in 1566.

The causes of the uprising explain the poor economic situation of the people, high taxation, oppression of the new Calvinistic religion.

Rupture of relations between Catholics and king on the one hand, on the other hand Calvinists and dissatisfied nobles, who demanded freedom of religion led to the rebellion. The leader of the Calvinists became William I of orange.

To quell the revolt, Philip had sent into the Lower country, the new Governor, Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, which is very vigorously has begun to address the tasks set before him. On the day of his arrival to Brussels at the head of the selected troops he approved the Council on disorder - better known as the Bloody Council due to many of the carried out death sentences. The Council was created to punish the instigators of political and religious issues in the Netherlands. In total with the Duke of Alba from 1567 to 1573 years in the Netherlands executed about 18,000 people.

Eighty years ' war began with two unsuccessful invasions in 1568 and 1572, William of orange with an army of sea ells, the irregular Dutch land and sea forces. Because of limited funding and a small army of public support for the invasion was doomed from the outset.

But quite unexpectedly geuzen seized the town of Brielle, 1 April 1572, which was a sign for the Calvinists in the provinces of Holland and Zealand to rise again.

The Spaniards were successful, but the Dutch revolution was costing them huge money. In this regard, was initiated peace negotiations, but they failed. Meanwhile the Duke of Alba who didn't love the Bottom of the country, especially due to the moist climate, several times asked Philip to release him from his duties as Governor. Philip, in the end, agreed, and in 1573 the new vicar was appointed Luis de Requesens. But in 1576 he suddenly died.

Except that at that time there was no successor, within a few months the mercenaries have not been paid, and in the Spanish army, there was serious discontent culminated in a rebellion called the “Spanish fury”. The soldiers defeated and sacked Antwerp, killing of 10,000 of its inhabitants.

The Revolution in the Netherlands continued as these circumstances further strengthened the determination of the rebels to gain independence of the country.

November 8, 1576, was signed the pacification of Ghent. Holland, Zealand and southern (Catholic) provinces agreed to religious tolerance and mutual cooperation to expel the Spaniards from the Netherlands of the earth. Joined the Ghent agreement and the other Northern provinces.

January 6, 1579 the Union was weakened by the defection from the agreement of Ghent, the Walloon provinces, signatories to the Union of Arras, which they had expressed loyalty to the Spanish king. In response, on 23 January 1579 in Utrecht was created by the Union against the Spanish Viceroyalty, which United the seven Northern provinces of the Netherlands and laid the foundations of the future independent Republic.

In 1588, the Spaniards, under the Governor of the Netherlands, Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma re-conquered the southern Bottom of the Country. The birth of the Dutch Republic in the North came under attack. But Spain is in parallel led military campaign against England and France, which allowed the Netherlands to start a counter-offensive

During the period of Twelve years truce (1609) the boundaries of the Dutch state was finally secured.

By and large, the Dutch bourgeois revolution covers the first fifty years of struggle between Spain and the Netherlands (1568 -1618). Over the past thirty years (1618 –1648), the conflict between Spain and the Netherlands were combined with the European war known as the Thirty years ' war.
