At the moment, science knows a hundred and five chemical elements, arranged in a periodic table. The vast majority of them referred to the metals, which implies the presence of these elements in the special qualities. This so-called metallic properties. These features primarily include ductility, high thermal and electrical conductivity, ability to form alloys, the low value of the ionization potential.

Metallic properties

The Metallic properties of a particular element due to the ability of its atoms when an interaction with the atomic structures of the other elements to shift in their direction the electron cloud or “give” them of their free electrons. The most active metals are those that have a low ionization energy and electronegativity. Also pronounced metallic properties are characteristic of elements having the largest possible radius of an atom is extremely small the number of outer (valence) electrons.

Metallic properties of the elements

As the content of valence orbits the number of electrons in the outer layer of the atomic structure increases, and the radius is decreased accordingly. In this regard, the atoms begin to strive for the accession of free electrons, rather than their impact. Metallic properties of these elements tend to decrease, and their non-metallic properties – to increase. Conversely, when increasing the atomic radius has increased, as has the metal properties. Therefore, a characteristic common to all metals are the so-called restorative quality – is the ability of an atom to give electrons.

The Most pronounced metallic properties of elements occur in substances first and second groups of the main subgroup of the periodic table, and alkali and alkaline earth metals. But the most powerful restorative qualities observed in France and in the aquatic environment – lithium has higher energy of hydration.

enhanced metallic properties

The Number of elements, which exhibit metallic properties in the period increases with the period number. In the periodic table metals and nonmetals are separated by the diagonal line that runs from boron to astatine. For this divide are the elements that have equally manifest those and other qualities. Such substances include silicon, arsenic, boron, germanium, astatine, antimony and tellurium. This group of elements called the metalloids.

Each period is characterized by a kind of "frontier zone", which are the elements with ambivalent qualities. Therefore, the transition from a pronounced metal-to-metal typical is gradual, and is reflected in the periodic table.

The General properties of metal elements (high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, ductility, characteristic luster, ductility, etc.) due to the similarity of their internal structure, but rather – the presence of the crystal lattice. However, there are many qualities (density, hardness, melting point), which gives all the metals are highly individual physico-chemical properties. These characteristics depend on the structure of the crystal lattice of each element.
