Monosyllabic word is not a trifle

In literature you can often find expressions like: “He answered in monosyllables” or “For her speech was characterized odnorodnosti”, “He was using only one-syllable words”. How to understand such statements? This should answer the question - what are these one-syllable words.

Division of words into syllables

From the school curriculum in the Russian language know that the syllable – is the smallest unit of speech due to articulation. Number of syllables in a word is determined by the number of vowel sounds. And it can consist of one or several sounds. The syllable is also the indivisible totality of one or more sounds.

Interestingly, in the flow of speech the syllable can not be dissected into smaller elements. Formally, of course, possible to distinguish individual phonemes (sounds). But in practice this cannot happen because human speech is typical syllabic pronunciation. There are languages in which syllables do not have semantic content and are not related to parts of speech. These include the vast majority of European languages and Russian in particular. For this reason, the delineation of each individual syllable in them can vary. For example, the word “Homeless” can be divided into syllables in different ways:

• No-house-NY;
• BAA-sdan-yy.

In several other languages, which include Chinese, the syllable is a fairly stable, unchanging unit, whose boundaries are clearly delineated. This happens due to the fact that in here there is a merging of syllables with certain parts of speech.

English is also quite rich in the described lexical units.

As in Chinese, they are called, basically, a natural phenomenon. Monosyllabic also, nearly all English pronouns. Monosyllabic English words even have special rules of reading.

Examples of use of Russian monosyllabic words

Another meaning of the word “one-word” – is a concise, short. This can be, for example, the remark in the dialogue. Monosyllabic speech usually characterizes literary character as secretive, taciturn, or is the demonstration that, due to various circumstances, he an unpleasant conversation. One-syllable words in the Russian language, besides its simplicity, another advantage: the emphasis in them is unquestionable.

Finally it is worth saying that poetry there is even a special verse – brachiale, which uses only one-syllable words. This verse is most often used to give the work a comic effect or to increase the rhythm of the poetic text. This size can be written as alla poem, or a part of it.

So, as you can see, monosyllabic words – it is a literary phenomenon.
