Political career

At the age of 22 years, Earl Charles grey was elected to Parliament from the County of Northumberland, and soon became one of the leaders of the Whig party. He was the youngest leader of a political movement, and the historian Thomas Macaulay Babington wrote about him: "while most of his peers were still struggling for trophies and scholarships, he won for himself a prominent place in Parliament. Without any advantages or connections, only great talents, and unsullied honour allowed to rise to that height".

Gray was a fierce advocate of Catholic emancipation and was involved in active promotion of parliamentary reform. He fought for equal rights representatives of the Anglican Church and the Catholics who in those days were forbidden to hold public office. In 1830 a party of Whigs came to power, and the count had held the post of Prime Minister of great Britain. During his reign, was adopted the Electoral reform of 1832, which provided the big cities representation in Parliament and increased the number of voters from 500 thousand to 813 thousand people. In 1833 a law was passed abolishing slavery.
