A map – it is quite succinct and easily understood product, which contains a vast amount of useful information. To all of this information conveniently "read" of cartographers came up with a huge Arsenal of special conventional signs. In this article we will tell you about one of them.
What is isotherm in geography and cartography? How it looks and what information carries in itself?
For geographical maps can show not only the really existing objects (e.g., mountains or sea), but also a variety of phenomena and processes (for example, rainfall in a particular area). For this purpose, the contours (from the Greek word ισος – “equal”). In cartography there are dozens of different contours. One of them – isotherm.
What is isotherm? In the geography of that imaginary line on the map connecting points of equal temperature. With their help scientists estimate and compare the climatic features of various regions of the planet. Thus, the isotherms are widely used in meteorology, climatology, and geography.
What is the isotherm from a philological point of view? This term consists of two Greek words: “izos” – “equal, equal” and “term” – “heat”. Usually, there are two types of isotherms:

Here everything is just. First, gather information from the ground meteorological observations. Then, on the basis of applied map of the location of these points and the values of the specified parameter at any specific point (in our case – is the temperature of the air). Next point with the same value combine with soft curves-isotherms.
The breaks of these lines (and their ends) sign the appropriate temperature values. Below the map was clearer, the spacing between the isotherms is very often filled with flowers, changing their hue and saturation.
Isotherm – very handy mapping tool. They are simple, obvious and hardly require explanation in the legend. They combine well with many other cartographic signs and are ideal for creating computer maps.
