The History of ancient Russia keeps a lot of mysteries and secrets. One of these mysteries-the first princes of Kiev, whom we know as Askold and dir. Who they were originally, where they came from, who had each other? Maybe it was all the same person?

Try to understand about the generally accepted version, as well as several events that allow historians based on very specific facts.

Official version

It is considered that Askold and dir were originally Vikings - the Rus, as they were called. They had no kinship with the ruling Prince Rurik, and was just his "nobles". When Rurik sat in Novgorod, he began to distribute Russian city to his closest people. So dir and Askold he sent to the South in search of a suitable place for the Board. Those down the Dnieper river down, saw the beautiful city of Kiev, where lived in the meadow. Askold and dir decided to stay there and declared themselves rulers.

They are loyal to the people, local customs and religion. A tribute left at the same level. Also, as with any Northern soldiers, they knew war, and came accompanied by well-armed squad. Therefore, Kiev has decided not to rebel and calmly accepted their new rulers.

About 860-866 years Askold and dir have made an ambitious military campaign to Constantinople. To protect your city from the warlike Russ, the reigning Emperor Michael III decided to interrupt the war with the Arabs, and hurriedly returned to the capital.

Kievan princes arrived under the walls of Constantinople, leading an impressive fleet of two hundred ships. They quickly and successfully plundered the suburbs, and besieged the city. Over the capital of the Byzantine Empire faced a real threat of conquest. Then the Emperor Michael and the Holy Patriarch Photios became hard to pray for the protection of the center of the Christian world. Suddenly, the sea rose a terrible storm, which dispersed and destroyed warlike ships of the Rus. Constantinople was saved by Divine Providence.

The origin of the Slavs. The influence of different cultures

Slavs (under this name), according to some researchers, appeared in the story only in 6 century ad. However, the language of nationality bears the archaic features of the Indo-European community. This, in turn, suggests that the origin of the Slavs h...

Askold and dir were forced to conclude a peace Treaty with the Byzantine Empire and decided to be baptized into Christianity.

In 879 he died in Novgorod Prince Rurik, leaving the heir a minor son, Igor, and his guardian – his cousin, who is known as Prophetic Oleg. He decided to take power not only over the North, but over the South land, so he gathered from the Slavs and Vikings to an impressive army and marched South. He surrendered the ancient Smolensk and Lyubech. Soon Oleg came to Kiev.

He was well aware that the Kievan princes have a strong squad and will be protected in order not to give up power. Therefore, Prophetic Oleg decided to act cunning. He left the bulk of his army in ambush, and he was posing as a peaceful merchant and invited Askold and dir to his trade negotiations. Those without fear went to the meeting, but on the shore they were surrounded by a military squad. According to the "chronicle", Oleg has come before seized by the princes and charged them that they're not the famous kind, and deceit rule the people. Then he pointed to little Igor and said,"Behold a Prince, the son of Rurik!”

The Askold and dir were killed immediately. Mound with the remains of the Askold still stands on the steep Bank of the Dnieper, and the ashes dir for a long time rested near the temple of St. Irene.

So Oleg began to reign in Kiev on behalf of Igor. He declared Kiev the mother of Russian cities, the center of Russian lands. In 882, the first time the Northern and southern lands were United under the rule of a single Prince.

This Is the official version of events. But historians consider a variety of options, based on a comparison of the various myths and legends.

History

For Example, there is disagreement about the origin of dir and Askold. Some historians believe that Askold was a Slav and a direct descendant of the dir. Others, however, only the Dir attribute of Slavic origin and role of a slave, and Askold I think the Vikings and the Governor.

The Ancient Byzantine sources in describing a military campaign of the Russians 866, all mention only one Prince, so it's possible that Askold and dir – one and the same person, the Varangians Askold nicknamed the deer. Translated from drevnekamennogo language dir meant “Beast” that could be a nickname-title.

If still confident to consider them as two separate people, it is logical to assume that Askold and dir were ruled at different times, and in the tale of bygone years, they artificially clustered co-rulers. The chronicler could combine the logic of how two illegal rulers. Historians wonder that the two princes were killed at the same time, according to Scripture, was buried in a very distant from each other. And Ioakimovskaya chronicle says that Oleg killed only one of the Prince – Askold and dir name not mentioned there at all.

If you compare multiple historical sources, it becomes quite obvious that the deer was the first ruler of Kiev and lived in the early and mid 9th century, and Askold became his successor and was knyajestva in the second half of the 9th century.

As we can see in the history of these Kiev princes are many loose ends that are securely hidden from us centuries of history. If we solve them?
