Normally, when one of the family members has a runny nose, almost no one pays attention to it. Having dripped your nose several times with cheap pharmacy drops, you can easily cope with this scourge. But only if we are not talking about newborn babies. And how to treat a runny nose in infants? Let's hear what experts say on this topic.

Attention! The article is informational in nature and cannot be used to make a diagnosis, prescribe treatment and does not replace a doctor's appointment.

runny nose in a child of 3 months

First of all, you need to get rid of the mucus accumulated in the spout with the help of a special simple tool called an aspirator. The aspirator looks like a medium-sized container with a rounded silicone tip. This tip needs to be pressed against the baby's nostril, the mucus immediately gets into a closed container when pumping out. Of course, it is impossible to cure a runny nose in this way, but it is quite possible to help the baby breathe.

In addition, it is important not to allow the mucus to thicken or dry up. If the child breathes easier while bathing or walking, it means that the air in your apartment is too dry. This often happens at the height of the heating season. This problem can be dealt with with the help of special humidifiers or more affordable means: wet rags on batteries, placed wide containers with water and regular ventilation.

How to treat a runny nose in infants? To begin with, experts recommend paying attention to folk remedies that do not contain any chemical additives. For example, you can apply a salt solution. In 100 grams of water, half a teaspoon of salt is dissolved (preferably sea food). 2-3 drops of warm solution should be dripped into the baby's nose. If the procedure is performed for the first time, the child may sneeze and cough, the procedure itself will be quite painful for him, but after several times the mucosa will get used to such an effect. You need to drip every 30-60 minutes.

Features of a runny nose in early childhood

In young children there is a specific type of rhinitis, the so-called physiological runny nose. This is due to the peculiarity of the structure of the nasal cavity in newborns.

Goblet cells that produce mucus are just getting used to working in a new mode, so they produce a secret in large quantities. The narrow nasal passages of the baby are clogged with this mucus.

At the same time, the snot is liquid, transparent and outwardly such a picture resembles a runny nose, but with one difference. Except for snot in the nose, nothing bothers the child. He is cheerful, sleeps well, eats normally, and his temperature is kept within normal limits.

With a viral or bacterial runny nose in an infant, the picture of the disease changes dramatically. A feature of rhinitis in children under one year old is the predominance of general symptoms over local ones.

An immature immune system immediately triggers a general inflammatory reaction, and a banal runny nose causes fever, cough, weakness, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, moodiness and other symptoms that frighten parents.

An inexperienced mother may not immediately understand that the cause of this condition was ordinary snot, and not some serious illness unknown to science.

What types of runny nose can bother a newborn:

  1. Viral. Develops when encountering viruses with acute respiratory viral infections. It is accompanied by severe swelling of the nose, high fever, mucous discharge from the nose and other symptoms.
  2. Bacterial. As a rule, it is accompanied by purulent discharge from the nose, as well as symptoms of general intoxication: fever, fever, sweating, refusal to eat, etc.
  3. Allergic. Transparent abundant watery discharge from the nose, lacrimation, redness of the skin.
  4. Mixed. A combination of bacterial-viral or bacterial-fungal infection. It is observed with reduced immunity or congenital immunodeficiency.

General principles of treatment

To treat snot in infants begin as soon as possible from the first signs of the disease. Depending on the type of rhinitis, the optimal regimen and therapy regimen are selected. Before starting treatment, the child should be shown to a doctor to find out the cause of a runny nose and select the necessary medications.

Let's consider the general principles of therapy of different types of rhinitis in newborns. Some points must be observed for any type of runny nose, while others will differ significantly depending on the cause of the disease.

Physiological runny nose

It is not necessary to treat a runny nose in a baby caused by anatomical features in most cases. If there is too much mucus and it prevents the child from breathing fully, then its excess is removed with the help of special nozzle pumps or cotton flagella.

What and how can I clean the baby's nose:

  • Cotton flagella. For this purpose, you can independently twist a flagellum from cotton wool or from a cotton pad. Such a flagellum is moistened with vaseline oil, after which it is shoved shallowly into the child's nose and scrolled. Snot and mucus stick to the flagellum and thus the nasal passages are cleaned.
  • Rubber balloon or enema. A soft rubber pear (enema) of a small size can be bought at any pharmacy. If viscous and thick snot has accumulated in the nose, then they can be softened with saline or sea water. The tip of the pear is lubricated with vaseline, it is compressed and the tip is carefully inserted into the nostril. They unclench the pear, and it begins to suck in air along with mucus. After the procedure, the instrument is washed.
  • Aspirators or nozzle pumps. These are devices that are designed to remove snot from the nose. There are mechanical (Otrivin baby) and electronic devices (B.Well aspirator). The principle of operation of the mechanical device: an adult inserts a tube into the child's nostril and sucks mucus out of it. They have a special filter that prevents the snot of a child from getting into an adult's mouth. The electronic device runs on batteries or from the mains and does everything by itself. Another type of nozzle pump is vacuum. It works from a home vacuum cleaner through special nozzles.

In addition to removing snot, with a physiological runny nose, it is recommended to maintain a normal temperature and humidity in the child's room and periodically moisten the nasal mucosa with saline solution.

Medicines for infants and their use

In addition to the above remedies, other local medications are also used to treat a runny nose at different stages in children:

  • Vasoconstrictive drops. These drops are prescribed as a therapy of despair with severe edema. For kids, they buy special children's forms, where the concentration of the active substance is significantly lower than in adult dosages. In children after a year, you can use Nasol baby, etc. Choose funds in the form of drops, not sprays. Do not use such drops for longer than 3-4 days. In case of overdose, complications in the form of tachycardia, vomiting and meningism (irritation of the meninges) are possible.
  • Antiseptic products. To disinfect the mucosa, you can choose Protargol. This is an old drug that contains colloidal silver. It disinfects and dries the mucous membrane. It is prescribed in young children. The disadvantage is the short shelf life and stains after such drops on clothes, which are almost not washed.
  • As antiseptic drops, you can use Miramistin, which has disinfecting properties and low allergenicity.
  • A folk remedy with antiseptic properties is a decoction of chamomile pharmacy, a freshly prepared solution is carefully pipetted into the baby's nose 4-5 times a day.
  • Antiviral and immunomodulatory agents. To stimulate local immunity, interferons in drops or Derinat are prescribed. These drugs are effective at the first signs of the disease or for its prevention. With a pronounced inflammatory reaction, they will not give the desired effect. In some cases, pediatricians prescribe immunomodulators in the form of rectal candles (Viferon, etc.)

Prohibited actions

How to treat a runny nose in a baby and at the same time not harm your child. You need to remember some rules:

  • For babies from the first days to 6 months of life, only drops are prescribed. In sprays, the active substance is injected into the nose in a jet and can damage thin mucous membranes or accidentally drive microbes into the ear through a wide auditory tube.
  • In infants, nasal flushing is not performed (in particular, with an Aqualore) for the same reason. At this age, the auditory tube is shorter and wider than that of an adult, so there is a high risk of infection there.
  • Inhalation with a runny nose is carried out only with a nebulizer. Steam inhalations can cause a burn of the mucous membranes.
  • With a physiological or viral runny nose, the use of vasoconstrictive drops can cause the opposite effect and provoke severe swelling of the mucous membrane and the nose will lay.
  • They use alternative medicine with great caution, because the immature immune system of a child can give a serious allergic reaction.
  • You can not drip antibiotics into a child's nose without prescribing a doctor.

Possible complications

Is it necessary to treat snot in children, some adults think, because it is known that even without medications, rhinitis goes away by itself in a week. In children, everything proceeds differently, even a slight violation of nasal breathing leads to a deterioration in the general condition and refusal to eat.

The baby may become dehydrated and even convulsions. In addition, there are problems with sleep, the baby becomes sluggish and moody.

When a baby has snot in the nasopharynx, they can flow down the back of the throat into the esophagus, and cause coughing attacks and infection of the underlying respiratory tract (causing pharyngitis, laryngitis, etc.).

Often a runny nose gives complications to the eyes and causes severe conjunctivitis. With weakened immunity, a banal runny nose can cause meningitis, sepsis and other lethal complications, so it is necessary to treat it in children.
