Uzbekistan has a large and beautiful city of Samarkand, which is often called the Museum under the open sky. And this is not accidental. In the past this town was one of the most powerful religious, political, cultural and scientific centers of Asia. Once scientists and government officials living on its territory, have made unique discoveries and build magnificent buildings. A particularly large contribution to the science was made ruler Muhammad Taragai, better known as Ulugh beg. The Observatory erected by him, is one of the main attractions of the city. It is a rich historical and cultural heritage.
Muhammad Taragai was a grandson of the great Amir Timur. From early childhood he showed great interest in various Sciences and a great desire for knowledge. The boy was not by nature a conqueror as his famous grandfather – Tamerlan. The training of the future ruler of Samarkand was engaged in some of the best teachers of those times. Teachers were able to instill in him a love for science and art.
As a young boy, he went with his grandfather in another aggressive campaign. While traveling, I saw the extraordinary construction of Ulugbek. The Observatory, built by scientists of Azerbaijan, conquered the boy for its architecture and beauty. We can say that it was at that moment in the heart of little Muhammad Taragay lived a dream of his own the same research center. After some time, Ulugh beg became the ruler of Transoxiana, whose capital was Samarkand. He began to realize his past plans.

The Construction started in 1420 Work on its construction took approximately three years. In development of the plan of building a huge contribution was made by scientists and astronomers, so that in the end, the Samarkand Observatory of Ulugh beg was the perfect instrument designed for the observation of various unusual and original cosmic bodies. It consisted of three floors and had the shape of a cylinder. This building was struck by its beauty and originality, as its architecture was not typical of the traditional buildings of the medieval East. This magnificent structure housed within its walls a Grand protractor, the radius of which is equal to more than 40 m. Thanks to this device it was possible to measure the altitude of celestial bodies during their passage through the celestial Meridian.
On the territory of the scientific centre tried to spend a lot of my free time Ulugbek. The Observatory became his second home. He tried his example to inspire scientists on new discoveries, and was the supervisor of almost all works and research. But permanent employment Affairs of the state took the Governor a lot of time and effort, so it is sometimes have had thoughts about closing a research center. Fortunately, one of the beginner astronomers have been able to convince and influence that changed his mind Ulugbek. The Observatory then has earned a new power. Muhammad Taragai created thanks to this unique construction, many of their scientific papers. And went down in history as a talented astronomer, Explorer and mathematician.
Although Ulugbek showed himself as humane and just ruler, unfortunately, not to everyone's liking its political order. Many were inclined to believe that he was more of your time devoted to science and not enough engaged in public Affairs. Therefore, in 1449 by his son Abd Latif, entered into a wicked conspiracy with the enemies of his father, killed Muhammad Taragay and seized power.
In Spite of such tragic events, Ulugbek Observatory continued to operate over the next twenty years. But soon began the persecution of the scientists that forced them to leave not only the centre but also in Samarkand. The building itself is built of a great scholar and ruler, remained neglected for a long time. In the sixteenth century Ulugbek Observatory was demolished almost to the ground, and then from there it is only the Foundation.
In the early twentieth century archaeologist and Explorer L. V. Vyatkin long time could not find the place, where once stood the centre. The remains of this old building was discovered thanks to one document, which was a dedication to the land and was dated to the seventeenth century. The last stage of the excavation was made in 1948 During the works were found fragments of the building, which once housed the Observatory of Ulugbek (Uzbekistan). Also was found the famous angel, which was mentioned above. This instrument is preserved in the underground part of the building. Now he is an exhibit in the cultural institution of Samarkand.
In the sixties of the last century near the location of this legendary medieval research centre was opened as a Museum. It was named after Ulugbek. The building's interior is decorated with various murals, which depict moments from the lives of greatruler and astronomer. The exhibition consists of photographs taken at the dig, and ancient astronomical instruments and tables of the heavenly bodies. In 2010 at the Museum was erected a monument in honor of Muhammad Taragay.
It Turns out that the most important scientific work of all life of Ulugbek were published after his death. This was possible only due to the fact that one of the astronomers had to take him to Samarkand, when scientists were persecuted. So “New Gurjanovae astronomical tables” was published in Istanbul and continued to be for many years unique in its kind. Thanks to this directory, mankind learned that the year consists of 365 days and 6 hours.
Ulugbek Observatory (Samarkand, Uzbekistan) - this magnificent structure, the walls of which were made many opinions and studies that have become outstanding contribution to the Treasury of human knowledge about astronomy.
