The Rest of the twelve great holidays are constant and are called neperehodimyh date. There are nine. The second most important after Easter in the Church calendar of Orthodox holidays is Christmas, which is celebrated annually on 7 January. This celebration set to honor the earthly incarnation of the son of God, Jesus Christ, the immaculate conception of the Holy spirit in the womb of the virgin Mary and born in Bethlehem.
Next on the calendar among the Church's feasts and fasts is followed by the Presentation of the Lord. On this holiday, Christians remember the day when the baby Jesus was first brought into the temple. The word “meet” from the Church Slavonic language is translated as “meeting”. This religious feast is celebrated on February 15.
April 7 the entire Orthodox world celebrates the day when the Holy Archangel Gabriel appeared to the virgin Mary, announced the glad tidings that from her womb is destined to the world the son of God, Jesus Christ. Established in honor of this event the holiday is called-the Annunciation.
In the Holy gospel tells how he went up with his disciples to mount Tabor, and having there prayer, the Lord was transfigured, he reveals to them his divine form. In memory of this momentous day was established the Church festival, celebrated annually on August 19.
Soon after – 28 August – comes the assumption of the blessed virgin. The memory of that day, when the mother of God, completing the earthly journey, ascended to the heavenly courts his son Jesus Christ. The festival is preceded by a Dormition fast, erected in honor of the fact that the mother of God until the last day and led an ascetic life and constantly prayed. The Nativity of the Theotokos – the so-called holiday, established in honor of the birth of the mother of Jesus Christ-virgin Mary. It is celebrated on September 21.
In the fourth century the Holy equal to the apostles Empress Helen went to Jerusalem, revealed to the world the cross became once the instrument of the execution of the Savior. This event served as the basis for the holiday celebrated on 27 September and called the exaltation of the Holy cross, or of the Exaltation.
The Following is a holiday celebrated on December 4 and called Introduction in temple Presvjatoj of the virgin. Its establishment is connected with the day when the mother and father of the virgin Mary-saints Joachim and Anna – dedicated to the service of God.
On January 19, we have a celebration called the Epiphany. It takes place in honor of the great day when Jesus Christ was baptized in the waters of the Jordan river. This feast is called the Theophany.
This completes the list of the twelve great Orthodox holidays, each of which is a reminder of the most important events of sacred history. These days, people visit Church and take part in a festive Liturgy.
In addition to these special days, the Church calendar provides for five holidays that are related to the category of great and permanent date.
One of them is the feast of the Circumcision of the Lord, established in honor of how on the eighth day from the birth of the baby Jesus was brought into the temple, where, according to Jewish custom, it has performed the rite of circumcision. This event, celebrated on 14 January, was a sign of the unity of the son of God with the people among whom he was incarnated in his earthly form.
Following the great feast falls on 7 July. It Is The Nativity Of John The Baptist. As you might guess, in the heart of the holiday lies the birth of St. John – the nearest predecessor (forerunner) of Jesus Christ, predicted the phenomenon in the world of the Savior, and then commits the rite of baptism in the waters of the Jordan river.
Five days after that – July 12 – Orthodox believers gather in temples to worship to honor the memory of the two apostles Peter and Paul. Such a high title, these servants of God received for the work required of them in the dissemination and adoption on the ground of faith in Christ. In people, this holiday is known as St. Peter's day.
Every year on 11 September in all Orthodox churches services are held, during which recall the sad event of sacred history, which gave the name to this great festival – the beheading of St. John the Baptist. According to the testimony of the Holy evangelists Matthew, Mark, and Luke (in the gospel of John does not say this), the Baptizer of our Lord Jesus Christ was beheaded at the command of the wicked Herod-ruler of Galilee.
Last of a number of annual holidays is the great intercession of the Theotokos, celebrated on 14 October. Holy tradition tells that October day 910 of the year Constantinople was captured by the Saracens, and when its inhabitants, looking for rescue, gathered in the Blachernae Church, the Queen of Heaven appeared and spread over them its mantle. The enemies retreated and the city was saved. Established in memory of this event the holiday symbolizes the intercession of the highest forces in the whole Orthodox people.
In addition to religious holidays, which was discussed above, the Orthodox calendar, and prescribed a series of posts covering the entire year. In accordance with its duration, they are divided into daily and multi-day. Let's start with the latter.
The longest and simply is a Great post. It includes two stages. The first of these is the Great lent-the forty days established in the memory of how it was during this time the Savior fasted in the desert. Then follows Holy Week – six days before the Passover and dedicated to the memory of the last stage of the earthly life of Jesus Christ ended on the cross of torture and death. Since lent is associated with Easter, the dates of its beginning and end change. According to the calendar of Church feasts and fasts 2018, it covers the period from 19 February to 7 April.
Next follows the fast of the apostles, anticipating proapototic feast of saints Peter and Paul (July 12). It starts on the Monday following the ninth Sunday after Easter, and ends on July 11. Thus, depending on the date of Easter, its duration may vary from 8 to 42 days. Annually from 14 to 27 August the Dormition fast continues, to commemorate the great events of sacred history – of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary, which became the end of the terrestrial life of the virgin Mary.
At the end of the calendar year is the Christmas fast, lasting from 28 November to 6 January and commemorates the great events of sacred history – from the earthly incarnation of the virgin Mary the son of God, Jesus Christ, immaculately conceived in her womb by the power of the Holy spirit. As the Dormition fast, he has fixed the dates of its start and end.
Among the Orthodox Church's feasts and fasts there are also separate days in which toduring the annual cycle (except solid weeks, which will be discussed below) to the believers required to abstain from non-Lenten food, marital relations and different kind of entertainment. It is primarily environment, because in this day of the week made his wicked betrayal of Judas, and Friday, installed in memory of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
In addition, a one-day fasting is prescribed to comply with Epiphany eve, preceding the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In people, this day is also called the Eve of the Epiphany. The name eve received from special vegetable dishes served to the table on this day. It consists of scalded grains of rice, wheat or lentils with the addition of seed juice of almonds or poppy, sweetened with honey.
A one-Day fast is also the feast of the beheading of St. John the Baptist. This day commemorated the martyrdom of the forerunner of the Lord, and abstinence is an expression of sorrow and grief associated with this event.
Finally, we should remember another day in which believers renounce worldly pleasures. It is the feast of the Exaltation or the exaltation of the cross, we note, as mentioned above, every year on 27 September. This post is set to mark the great importance attached to this event.
Concluding the conversation about what religious holidays and the posts provided by the Orthodox calendar, it only remains to mention those time periods, during which Wednesdays and Fridays are fast days. In year five of them, and they are called solid weeks.
First of all, this Christmastide, which lasts from Christmas to Epiphany and includes festive celebrations and divination. In addition, the Lenten restrictions have been lifted in the Week of the Publican and the Pharisee. It lasts from 28 January to 3 February. A solid week is also everyone's favorite Carnival – the week preceding the beginning of lent. However, in this period already forbidden food meat, while milk, eggs and fish still on the tables.
Completely abolished dietary restrictions and during Bright week – the first week after Easter. During this time Orthodox Christians enough to saturate after completion of lent.
And finally, the last solid week, part of the annual cycle, begins in the Holy Trinity day and lasts for weeks.
