Museum of soil science - the famous scientific center

Famous naturalist Dokuchaev has always attached great importance to the wide dissemination of information about the soil. Thanks to his efforts, was organized the first not only in Russia but throughout the world, the Museum of soil science. Saint Petersburg began to attract not only art lovers but also scientists.

Good purpose

The Objectives of the institutions established were the following: development of science of the classification of soil types and collection the most complete collection of Russian soil and subsoil. Soil science Museum opened its doors in 1904. The first exhibits were the items from the collections of Dokuchaev, who was exhibited in many cities of Russia, as well as in Chicago and Paris.

From the first years of its existence, the Museum of soil science played a role in the largest science center in the country. Currently, it operates an analytical laboratory and a library.

Transformation

In 1917, the Museum of soil science is included in the Department of soil opened by the Permanent Commission for studies of natural productive forces of the Soviet Union. 1925 marked the opening of the exposition under the leadership of B. Polynov. The updated exhibition space was organized by departments, revealing features of the processes of soil formation and weathering, represent a systematically compiled collection of soil monoliths of the European and Asian territories of the Union. At the same time, the Museum of soil science was added to the historical section.

New horizons

Thanks to the Soil Institute has the opportunity to fully develop the Museum of soil science. During the reconstruction, was formed by three divisions – pedagogical, systematic and demonstration. The last was an introduction and soil-geographical division. All the natural areas and their role in soil formation was considered carefully.

In 1946 was celebrated a hundred years since the birth of Vasily Dokuchaev. In honor of this, the institution was renamed the Central Museum of soil science to them. V. V. Dokuchaev.

The Development of the new General plan took Zinaida Shokalsky. It was in 1950. The result of this painstaking labor has increased the number of layouts and comparative performances of different types of soils.

Modern art

Currently, the soil science Museum allows its visitors to learn about what a soil as a special natural body, what are the ecological and geographical features of its education, also discusses violations and the protection of soil, about its transformation. It is noteworthy that the information for each section is supplied in the form of thematic and artistic complex. The latter includes scientific data in graphical, diagrammatic and digital form. Artistic elements are represented by photographs, herbarium, dioramas, sculptures and landscape painting.

The Main exhibits of the Museum are, of course, the soil monoliths. They represent vertical slices of soil with natural structure in the form of a prism. Their width-22 cm height-meter. At the moment the exposition is presented 332 instances.

The Underlying collection

- monoliths characterizing the soil cover of the planet;

- cultivated soil;

- re-cultivated;

is reclaimed;

- anthropogenically disturbed soils.

Among the unique exhibits – soil globe with a diameter of 1 m 20 cm, a monolith age of 125 thousand years, an octagonal monolith with a height of 170 cm from the Central Chernozem nature reserve “Streletskaya steppe" (Kursk oblast).

Sightseeing

The Museum of soil science (Saint Petersburg) offers an interesting educational program for pupils, students and all those interested in the mysteries of the world. So, younger children and preschoolers can see the influence of the climate, plants, and soil life, traditions and customs of different peoples when viewing themed cartoons. Also the Museum staff organize workshops on making application in the form of seeds of plants growing in different soil types. No wonder that even kids with interest visit the Museum of soil science. “underworld” – another tour, during which children are in soil and get acquainted with the peculiarities of life of its inhabitants. After an exciting journey to view these cartoons are offered as “the City bacteria”, “the Journey of the rain worm” and “Super-drops rescue”.

Operation Mode

Soil science Museum opens its doors at 10am and closes at five in the evening. On Tuesday, you can visit this place without an appointment and without charge. Tour support in this day is not available. Saturday and Sunday – weekend.
