Knock Nevis – the biggest tanker in the world, also known as Jahre Viking, Happy Giant, Seawise Giant and Mont. The oil ship was designed and manufactured by the Japanese in 1974-1975, long time being the biggest ship ever built. In 2010 “sea giant” has been decommissioned and subsequently dismantled for scrap.

Construction of the tanker Knock Nevis was started in 1974 by Japanese company Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Osaka for the Greek ship magnate Aristotle Onassis. However, due to the oil embargo in the 1970s, the billionaire was declared bankrupt before the ship was built.

Start of operation

Initially, the Knock Nevis tanker delivered oil from fields in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to the US. Later he was transferred to the Persian Gulf for oil exports from Iran. In the 80-years war broke out between neighbours Iraq and Iran. In 1986 the ship during the movement to the Strait of Hormuz were attacked by Iraqi aircraft. A few Exocet missiles struck the ship. The tanker in the attack caused massive damage. Eventually it sank in the shallow waters of Kharg island.

In March 2004 he was sent to the new owner (a company First Olsen Tankers) in Dubai dry docks in which the ship converted into a floating oil storage and handling terminal. Under the name Knock Nevis, he began working in the field al-Shaheen in the waters of Qatar.

In December 2009, the tanker Knock Nevis were sold to Indian recyclers for disposal. The last place to moor the ship sailed under the name Mont. On arrival the vessel was deliberately run aground off the coast of the Indian state of Gujarat in the port of Alang. 4 Jan 2010 was the last official photo of the Knock Nevis, and then started dismantling the legend of the seas.
