Olonetsk province: a history of the Olonets province

Olonets province was one of the Northern parts of the Russian Empire. It is in a separate Vicariate by the decree of Catherine the great in 1784. Not counting the small breaks, the province existed until 1922.

Olonets province

Olonets province was located in the range of 60-68 degrees North latitude, 45-59 degrees East longitude.

The province is Bordered with the following provinces:

  • Novgorod and St. Petersburg province, the shore of lake Ladoga (South);
  • Arkhangelsk province (North);
  • White sea, Vologda province (East);
  • Finland (West).

The Length in both directions was 700 miles, and the total area – just over 116 square miles that is 130 square kilometers.

History

Future Olonets province was part of the different territories, the most famous of which was Novgorod the Great. In 1649, had established the Olonets district. He was part of Ingermanlandski, St. Petersburg, and Novgorod provinces.

The First Governor of Olonets became Gavriil Romanovich Derzhavin. He is known for his poetry, but there was a statesman, a Senator, a privy councillor.

The Main town of Olonets on the ground was all the time in Petrozavodsk. Today it is the largest city of the region and also the capital of the Republic of Karelia.

The history of the city began with laying in 1703 Shuisky Armory of Peter the great. The factory was surrounded by a rampart and placed cannon on it. The plant has gradually turned into a fortress, which was able to resist the Swedes. Soon the plant became the largest enterprise in the nation.

Since Peter the great visited the factory, he built a wooden Palace, a Church camp, and planted a garden. Around the plant there was a settlement, which every year increased.

When Catherine the great built a new cannon foundry (Alexander). After its opening in 1777 Petrozavodsk officially became a city in 1781 and the centre of the Olonets land.

During the war of 1812, the town became a temporary refuge for the treasure Academy of arts. In Petrozavodsk moved the Russian national library, the Ministry of education, part of the Main pedagogical Institute and the Affairs of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
