Alkaline earth metals are the elements that belong to the second group of the periodic table. These include substances such as calcium, magnesium, barium, beryllium, strontium, and radium. The name of this group suggests that in water, they give alkaline reaction.

Alkali and Alkaline-earth metals, or their salts, are widely distributed in nature. They are represented by minerals. The exception is radium, which is a fairly rare element.

All of the above metals have some common characteristics that helped to unite them in one group.

Alkaline earth metals and their physical properties.

Almost all of these elements are solids grayish color (at least under normal conditions and room temperature). By the way, the physical properties of the alkali metals are a little different — of these substances although quite stable, but easy to influence.

Interestingly, with the sequence number in the table is growing and this figure of a metal, such as density. For example, this group has the smallest value of calcium, while radium a density similar to iron.

Alkaline earth metals: chemical properties

For starters, it is worth noting that the chemical activity increases according to the sequence number of the periodic table. For example, beryllium is fairly persistent. Reacts with oxygen and Halogens only enters at high temperatures. The same applies to magnesium. But calcium is slow to oxidize at room temperature. The other three of the band (radium, barium, and strontium) react quickly with oxygen at room temperature. That is why keeping these items, the coating layer of kerosene.

The Activity of oxides and hydroxides of these metals increases in the same pattern. For example, the hydroxide of beryllium is not soluble in water and is considered an amphoteric substance, and a hydroxide of barium is quite a strong alkali.

Alkaline earth metals and their brief description

Beryllium is a strong metal light grey color, has a high toxicity. The first element was discovered in 1798 by the chemist Vauquelin. In nature, there are several minerals of beryllium, of which the most famous are the following: beryl, phenakite, chrysoberyl and danalite. By the way, some isotopes of beryllium have high radioactivity.

Interestingly, some forms of beryl are precious jewelry stones. These include emerald, aquamarine and Heliodor.

Beryllium is used for the manufacture of certain alloys, rocket fuel. In nuclear power this item is used to slow down neutrons.

Calcium is one of the most well-known alkaline earth metals. In its pure form it is a soft substance of white color with a silver tint. First pure calcium was isolated in 1808. In nature this element is present in the form of minerals such as marble, limestone and gypsum. Calcium is widely used in modern technologies. It is used as a chemical source of fuel, but also as fireproof material. For anybody not a secret that calcium compounds are used in the manufacture of building materials and medicines.

This element is in every living organism. Basically, he is responsible for the work of the motor apparatus.

Magnesium is a lightweight and quite malleable metal with a characteristic grayish color. In its pure form was isolated in 1808, but its salts were known much earlier. In nature, magnesium is found in such minerals as magnesite, dolomite, carnallite, kiseri. By the way, the magnesium salt of provides water hardness. A huge number of compounds of this substance can be found in sea water.
