Such a harsh winter was 50 years old. In November, hit 30 degrees of frost, and in January the air temperature dropped to 40-45 degrees below zero. And the weather held out until March. Frozen ground resembled concrete and centuries-old pine trees burst from freezing over the entire length with a sound like cannon shot. Have not regretted the nature and snow, which was almost every day. So inhospitable winter was in 1939-1940 in the North of the USSR and in Finland. And that's when the Soviet leadership decided to punish “high-handed Finns” hands of the red army. Since 30 November has begun “famous” the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940, which was then called “liberation campaign".

On 23 August 1939 between Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression Pact. This document had also a secret addition. According to him, the two great powers divided their spheres of influence, and under the “wing” of the Soviet Union among other States, has hit Finland. Meanwhile, in March 1938, the Soviet government was negotiating with the government of Finland on joint action to strengthen Maritime and land borders both States. The background to these negotiations was the occupation of Austria by Germany and the complication of the political situation in Europe. The Soviet side wanted in the first place to guarantee that no enemy will pass through Finnish territory will not be able to threaten Leningrad from the other side. But the Finnish government on such proposals refused, and thereby come one step closer to the Finnish war became inevitable.

However, soon the Finns themselves realized how short-sighted was such a refusal, and began feverishly to arm. The Chairman of the defense Council then they had a Marshal Mannerheim. And supply its military-industrial complex of Finland earned a “full throttle”. Special attention was paid to the Finnish military to strengthen and modernize the fortifications that were built before that on the Karelian isthmus. But after Germany invaded Czechoslovakia (April 1939), with the initiative of the Soviet Union began a new round of negotiations. This time, the Soviet leadership offered Finland military assistance in case of aggression. And in response, the Finns had to lease the Union of several Islands in the Gulf of Finland. For them, the military leadership of the Union planned to equip more base to cover the Kronstadt sea side. Although Mannerheim urged politicians to accept the proposal of the Soviet Union, his opinion was ignored. After that a peaceful solution to the conflict between the parties became impossible, and the Soviet-Finnish war was only a matter of time.

And a non-aggression Pact with Germany for some time has unleashed the Soviet Union, and the Moscow decided to invade Finland. Formal occasion, followed the Finnish war in 1939, began shelling the positions of the red army near the village of Maynila. It happened on November 26 and carried out this provocation by the NKVD, acting under the guise of the Finnish troops. After that it was all sorts of torn diplomatic relations and on 30 November began a large-scale invasion of the red army on the territory of a neighboring state. The military leadership of the USSR was planning for three weeks to break the Finnish army and occupy Helsinki.

But the plans of the Soviet military chiefs were not destined to lose. The famous frontal assault on the Mannerheim line failed. Then Soviet propaganda blamed this failure on the strength of this defense system. Though actually Finnish fortifications built on the Karelian isthmus, 10 times weaker than the French had the Maginot line number of bunkers, pillboxes and artillery weapons. And in fact, the Mannerheim line was not an insurmountable obstacle to the then armies. However, the Red army for the first three weeks failed to penetrate even the first line of the Finnish positions, not to mention the occupation of Helsinki. And December 21 this attack completely stopped, and on the 26th of the same month the Red army went on the defensive. Finnish war threatened to become protracted.

After that, an attempt was made to apply a secondary attack on the Finnish positions North of lake Ladoga. But this attempt ended in failure, and as a result, two “red” of the division were surrounded and completely destroyed. And in that area the Finns surrounded and destroyed five divisions of the red army. And again to attack the Soviet troops began only on 1 February 1940, after they had received substantial reinforcements. Now on the Mannerheim line aimed North-Western front commanded by Timoshenko. It included the 7-th and 13-th army. Daily artillery fire had weakened the defense of the Finns. And only on 11 February that the defense of the Finns flinch. And on 14 February, the Red army took the city Amount.

Thus, the red army advanced slowly, and in March have already begun the battle for the city of Vyborg. Now the Finnish government, seeing the futility of further resistance, Moscow sent a delegation for peace talks. They took 4 days, and March 13, have stopped all military action. The Finnish war ended, and the government accepted all the conditions that they were offered the Soviet leadership. The result of this hard victory of the USSR received the city of Vyborg, the entire Karelian isthmus and the area located to the North of lake Ladoga, together with the city of Sortavala. Thus, managed to move the border from Leningrad to 150 kilometers, although connectFinland to the Soviet Union still did not work. And the Finns as a result of this war lost all his defenses and left virtually defenseless.
