In nature has its own, sometimes harsh laws. Between different organisms even of the same species there is often competition. What is the struggle? What are the causes and the effects it can have?

Intraspecific struggle: definition and the essence of the concept

The Relationship of living organisms among themselves can be different. Sometimes they manifest themselves in the form of cooperation where benefit both parties, are sometimes mutually derogatory. Competition is a kind of relationship in which organisms compete. Benefit usually gets one.

There are two types of competition: interspecific and intraspecific. First, as the name implies, takes place between members of different species. It often occurs when life organisms require the same resource, e.g. water. Especially if the amount of resource is limited.

the struggle

Intraspecific struggle is manifested in representatives of one or more populations within the same species. In this case, the ecological niche in living organisms coincided, so the competition is tougher and more acute than in the case of interspecific competition.

Causes and consequences

Members of the same species compete for territory or food. The need for it appears that representatives of the populations becomes too much. One of the reasons may be a sharp change in environmental conditions as a result of natural disasters or calamities.

Intraspecific struggle is constantly going on as competition for fertilization. Competition is more common among males, forced to fight for the attention of females. It is well developed in species where social roles are clearly defined, and with the help of competition is chosen by the leader.

 intraspecific struggle definition

Competition within species – an important natural mechanism that regulates the number of individuals to the population from growing excessively. It is also a serious engine causing organisms to mutate, to adapt to the environmental conditions.

Intraspecific struggle: examples

Animals who practice competition with their fellows quite a lot. To reduce competition in a population of animals can produce a variety of devices. For example, in insects at different stages of development, individuals differ in appearance, method of feeding etc butterflies this pupae, dragonflies, ants and other larvae.

More than a thousand species of animals as competition chose cannibalism. In some species it is always present, others occur in ‘hard times" when adverse environmental factors. Female praying mantis and black widow eat the partner immediately after mating, lions can encroach on their own babies, hamadryas eat the offspring of conquered females.

Examples of plants

Animals in the best of their ability more vividly and variously exhibit the rivalry. In plants, intraspecific struggle is slow. It occurs in the competition for sunlight, water and nutrient resources.

Have You seen in the forest, weak and poorly developed trees, while their counterparts at the distance of half a meter grow tall and strong? Most likely, they came under the influence of the competition factor. More resistant plants grow more actively, gradually shading foliage “neighbors”. In the absence of the sun weak individuals grow worse and eventually die.

intraspecific struggle examples of animals

An Example is the development of powerful branched roots in plants. The more they grow, the less nutrients will get neighboring plants. Thus, intraspecific competition performs the function of natural selection, contributing to the survival of the strongest and fittest organisms.
