Among the philosophers professing the empirical and idealistic views, one of the most famous is George Berkeley. His father was an Englishman, but George considered himself an Irish because it was there, in the South of Ireland, he was born in 1685. With fifteen years of a young man began a period of study at the College, with whom he will be linked one way or another for a long period of his life (until 1724). In 1704, Berkeley-Junior gets a bachelor's degree and three years – a master's degree with the right to teach in the Junior pedsostava. After a few years he becomes a priest of the Anglican Church, and then – a doctor of philosophy and a senior lecturer at the College.
Back in the early years D. Berkeley choosing between materialistic attitudes and subjective idealism, took the side of the latter. He became the protector of religion, and in his works showed the dependence of the human perception of a matter of how it sees and feels the soul (mind, consciousness), formed by God. In his youth, wrote works that became important for the development of philosophical thought, and glorified the name – George Berkeley.
Philosophy and the search for truth became the meaning of life the Irish thinker. Among his works interesting: the ‘Experience the new theory of vision”, “a Treatise concerning the principles of human knowledge”, “Three conversations between Hylas and Villanosam”. Publishing work on a new vision, a young philosopher set himself the goal is to diminish the value of the primary qualities, proving the independence of our consciousness and the reality of the matter. In contrast to the theory of Descartes on the length of the bodies has already won in that time popularity, it reveals the dependence of the perception of distance, shape and position of objects by sight. According to the philosopher, the connection between the various sensations – this is the region of logic that is formed by experience.

Among the works of the philosopher was different reflections including those with a theological bias. But one of the most interesting works is “Three dialogue between Hylas and Philonous" (George Berkeley-philosophy), a brief account of which one can say that the author raised the question of metaphysical relativity of perception understanding of reality, and phenomenalism. In the work “Movement” Berkeley disputed Newton's views about an abstract sense of movement. The philosophical approach of George lies in the fact that the movement cannot be independent of space and time. Not only this concept was criticized by the philosopher, but many other categories of Newton.
Worth mentioning is also the two other works of Berkeley: a conversation between freethinkers “Alciphron” and philosophical speculations on tar-water, where he raises the question of medical use of tar and retreats in the direction of the free abstract philosophical and theological in nature.
The wife of the philosopher was Anna Forster-the judges daughter (her father was Irish Supreme judge in litigation). It is worth noting outgoing, friendly and cheerful character of George. He was loved by friends and acquaintances. His care soon was the foundling hospital, established by Royal Charter. His wife bore him seven children. However, in those days many children did not survive to adulthood, the age of reason due to disease. At Berkeley, only three survived, the rest died.
When George Berkeley left, he made a proposal to found in Bermuda a school where the Gentiles would be drawn to the Christian faith. First, the mission was strongly approved by Parliament and supported by aristocratic circles. However, when the missionary and his companions withdrew to the island, she was gradually forgotten. Without proper funding, the scientist, the philosopher had to stop the missionary work. Gradually he leaves his business and spends more time with his son. Lived George Berkeley sixty-seven years and died in 1752. After him is named the city of Berkeley in one of the States – California.
Under the influence of ideology of the great philosopher were many thinkers, including Kant and Hume. The main idea is propounded in his views of Berkeley, was the significance of the touch of the soul and form her images. In other words, any perception of matter is a consequence of perception of the human soul. His main doctrine was the theory of subjective idealism: ‘There is only me and my sensual perception of the world. Matter does not exist, only my subjective perception of it. God sends forms and ideas by which man perceives everything in this world…”.
In the understanding of the philosopher to exist – to perceive. Ontology Berkeley – the principle of solipsism. According to the thinker, the existence of other souls, having “end” design is the only plausible probable inference, the basis of which are analogies.
However, in the teachings of the philosopher there is some inconsistency. For example, in the same substance “I” he used the same arguments to criticize the material and the evidence of the indivisibility and unity of the beginning. However, itfollower of David Hume formalized these ideas into a theory, where he moved the concept of matter to the spiritual component: individual “I” – “a bundle of perceptions". Not to break away from the materialistic view when studying the work, which was written by the philosopher George Berkeley.
Quotes the theologian and philosopher to instill the idea of eternity and importance of God in human life, its dependence on God. At the same time however encounter some contradiction and inconsistency in Berkeley work that appears in critical statements by many philosophers.
Berkeley came to the conclusion about the existence of God, who alone raises his will the feeling in people's souls. According to him, man has no power over his feelings, even if it seems so. After all, if the man opens his eyes and sees the light – it's not from his will depends, or hears the bird – that is also not his will. He can't choose between “vision” and “not by sight" and, therefore, have a different will, a higher level, which produces feelings and sensations in man.
Studying the works of which were written by George Berkeley, some researchers came to the conclusion (which, however, is not confirmed conclusively, however, have the right to exist) that the views of the philosopher formed on the basis of the theory Malebranche. This gives you the opportunity to consider D. Berkeley Irish cartesianas, rejecting the presence of empiricism in his teaching. Since 1977 in Ireland, publish a journal-Bulletin in honor of the great philosopher.
The Doctrine, which left George Berkeley biography of the thinker – all this is of great interest and value to the historical development of philosophy. His theory gave a new impetus, a new spiral of development in the direction of philosophical thought. Schopenhauer considers the merits of the immortal Berkeley and calls him the father of idealism. Thomas Reid also has long been impressed by the philosophical thoughts propounded by George Berkeley. The main ideas of the philosopher will study more than one generation of thinkers. However, many of them, including Thomas Reid, later began to criticize them.
The Doctrine of Berkeley included in the textbooks in philosophy as empirical views. More than one generation of philosophers will be impressed by the beauty of his theory, and then accept, develop or refute it. The greatest popularity of his views acquired in Poland, but also in many Slavic countries his philosophies were prevalent and have taken a worthy place among similar works.
