Traditionally, the concept of “middle ages" is taken to cover the period from V to XV century. However, in the philosophy the beginning of the middle ages refers to the early period — the first century, when only began to establish the basic tenets of Christianity. This principle of establishing the origins of medieval philosophy can be explained by the fact that the main problems that relate to the philosophy of the middle ages, were associated with the adoption and further the spread of Christian religious teachings, which at this time was in its infancy in the bosom of the philosophical Sciences.

In the philosophical currents of the time trend to the rationale of the divine nature and resolution of such problems as the existence of God and the concretization of Christian theory. The philosophy of the middle ages in academia usually periodicities accordingly, the main stages of development of the religious teachings of the time.

The First and fundamental step in the development of the philosophy of the middle ages are traditionally considered the Church fathers (I-VI centuries). The main directions at this stage of the development of philosophical thought has been the establishment and defense of Christian doctrine, which was carried out “fathers of the Church”. The definition of "Church fathers" specifically refers to thinkers who contributed to the doctrinal justification of Christianity. Often, the apologists of the Christian dogmas were well-known philosophers, such as Augustine, Tertullian, Gregory of Nyssa, and many others.

The Second stage in the establishment of the philosophical ideas of the time considered scholasticism — (IX-XV century). At this stage there is a further concretization of the Christian theory involving all the possibilities of a philosophical science. Scholastic philosophy is sometimes called “school” because, first, it is for philosophy was studied and developed in the monastic schools, and secondly, scholasticism, the exposition of Christianity were brought to available to almost all levels.

The problems that troubled the minds of medieval philosophers were distinguished by their diversity, but they all agree on one thing — indirect or direct reasoning about God. If the consciousness of the believer God as a problem simply does not exist, since God is perceived by believers as a reality, for the philosopher, whose mind is free from any faith, God was a actual problem and tried to solve the best minds of the middle ages.

The Basic problems of medieval philosophy - the actuality of God's existence gave rise to constant debate between the nominalists and advocates of realism to the topic of the nature of universals. Realists tried to prove that universals (General concepts) really exist, and therefore – real and the existence of God. The nominalists, in turn, believed that universals of their existence in some degree “obliged” things, because really there are only things, and universals arise when one develops the need to give certain things their names. According to the nominalists, God is only a name, denotes the set of ideals of mankind.

The Philosophy of the middle ages and Renaissance was marked by the fact that the great thinkers of that time have repeatedly put forward all sorts of evidence that God really exists. For example, Thomas Aquinas — famous philosopher - scholar cited five proofs that God exists. All of this evidence was based on the fact that every phenomenon in this world must have a first cause.

If the proponents of realism has sought to justify the existence of God by proof of existence of General concepts (universals), Thomas Aquinas proved it as having Supreme cause of all things. He was trying to achieve a sort of harmony of faith and reason, where priority is given to faith.

The Philosophy of the middle ages is essentially a theocentric one. Here is clearly expressed the desire for understanding God as the only reality that determines everything that exists. A solution to the problem of the existence of God acceptable religion in all respects, objectively determined by the place of philosophy in the spiritual and social life of the time. The philosophy of the middle ages eventually gave way to new ideas of the Renaissance, which returned to the spiritual life of the oft-forgotten ideals of ancient aspiration for freedom.
