In science dominated by the view that the movement of the latter, who in the 1st to 3rd centuries ad moved to areas of the Roman provinces, the Northern black sea coast played a special role. By this time the formation of some cultures Slavic type, such as, for example, przeworska, Kiev and others. Chernyakhov culture

Origins

The Chernyakhov Culture emerged as a result of migration processes, which took place on the territory of Eastern European countries. Many historians associate her appearance with the resettlement of the Goths, who, occupying the Ukrainian territory, mixed with the local population. At this time there emerged the state Oium. Its borders coincide with the political education. Due to the complex migratory flows, the Chernyakhov culture was multiethnic, composed of Slavs, antes, Germans, Scythians, Sarmatians. Historian Fishermen believed that she was old Slavonic, but this view is disputed in science.

Economy

The Culture of the Chernyakhov covers the time period from II to IV century ad It was at its economic level is quite advanced. Basis economy has performed plow agriculture. Archaeologists have found the remains of plows, iron arrowheads, hoes, used in agriculture. Dominated by ranching and livestock, although the inhabitants raised pigs, horses. At some metallurgical sites discovered bugles. Residents, apparently, were familiar with various methods of processing of iron (quenching) and steel production. However, a special many preserved bronzes. There is a view that some practices were borrowed from the Roman provinces, and also from the Central European region.

Home

The Chernyakhov culture was spread mainly in forest areas, so her home was large in size and generally rectangular shape. Fortified settlements are few, but still some of them remained in the southern area (Town, Aleksandrovka). Their walls reach twelve meters in height, has the earthworks and fortifications. They were located at higher elevations, whereas the ordinary house - along the tributaries of small rivers.

The Dwelling was divided into two parts: residential and commercial. In the center was a hearth. In some houses the walls were made “dry”, ie, without a special binder solution. These structures generally are columnar, their frame was made of wattle and daubed with clay. The home was located “nests” on floodplains. Inside they had one or two cameras.

Monuments

Chernyakhov archaeological culture retained a number of interesting monuments. First of all we are talking about the famous Serpent (Troyanovich) shafts, which are located to the South of Kiev on the banks of the Dnieper. This colossal structure was defensive in purpose. It is a chain of earth mounds and ditches stretching for a great distance (some buildings had a length of from one to one hundred fifty kilometers).

Of Special interest are also reminders of the Chernyakhov culture in Vinnytsia region. Here was found a unique rock figure on the value of which is stillscientists argue. It depicts a leafless tree on one of whose branches sits the cock, and before him - a man, behind which is located a deer. Furthermore, the composition has a frame in the space between the horns. Another monument in the same area - 'kyi quarry of volcanic tuff for the manufacture of millstones. This indicates a high level of development of metallurgy in the region.

Burials

Ware complex of the Chernyakhov culture can be traced not only in dwellings, but burial. However, as a rule, in the graves they find a few, but nevertheless some artifacts allow you to recreate the look of this period. In the burial pits are sometimes excavated household items and household items. Sometimes there are vessels and details for homework, for example, spindles. Find and decorations. One example is the fibula.

The Chernyakhov culture is characterized by two methods of burial: the burials and cremation. In the first case we used the usual pit of rectangular shape, the second the remains were placed in vessels: jugs, pots and even bowls. In the tombs of the meet and the remains of weapons: for example, arrowheads, spears, bent in a ritual swords. Available as both a single and binary burial.

Household Items

The Settlement of the Chernyakhov culture, as a rule, was economic in its purpose and functions. Therefore, it is often found in products for agriculture and industry. The residents knew the Potter's wheel, they did the dishes of different shapes. Also was a highly developed weaving, archaeologists periodically find traces of different fabrics to household items and home wares.

Cookware

We should say about vessels of clay, as it is in this complex duffle archaeologists often distinguish the culture. The population of the reporting period izgotovleno a variety of household items, but is especially known for the finds of vessels, decorated with either horizontal lines or additional nalanie ridges and grooves. Among the notable finds of the black sea amphoras and red clay and krasnoumovos dishes, created and brought from the workshops of the Roman provinces. Products out of coarse clay usually found in outbuildings.

Zarubintsy and Chernyakhov culture

Other works

The Metal of the Chernyakhov culture – it is predominantly iron. Population skillfully treated ore are obviously not without the influence of Roman technology. However, finds of weapons not so much: it's mostly arrowheads, spears, parts of swords.

We should also tell about the treasures. On the territory of culture found in a large number of coins of the Roman coinage: to the West of the Dniester – bronze, East – silver. The latter discovered quite a lot of treasures, however, experts are of the opinion that the money was used for international trade, while local needs were used barter. Rarer coins of the Bosporan coinage.

Duffel complex

Among the artifacts found are a large number of ornaments: for example, in a large number of finds of brooches, beads, buckles, combs. From objects of everyday use are knives, axes, spurs. Occasionally find military items, but there are some. Of particular interest are the swords, daggers, spears. Separately it should be said about the original discovery-the image of a calendar on the vessel. It has a round shape, and under each month – the picture.

Vessels

Thus, the Chernyakhov culture, photos of monuments which are presented in this article, differed quite a high level of development in economic and business spheres. Separately should be said about vessels for ritual purposes: some of them found image calendars. In addition, there are finds of glassware. The technique of its manufacture was mastered by the Romans in the first century ad and moved to the population of these cultures. Often find the vessels of the egg-shaped yellowish or greenish color.

Ethnography

The Chernyakhov culture, as mentioned above, was a cosmopolitan in its ethnic composition. This is due to the migration flows that occurred on the European continent in the present time. In this regard, historians have identified a number of ethnographic components in its composition: Germanic, Sarmatian-Scythian, Slavic. The first is represented in binary graves, large houses and buildings, as well as special ceramics valebasoga type. These features are characteristic for almost the entire distribution area of this culture.

The Second type of Ethnography presented a large stone constructions, multi-chamber homes, special funeral ritual, when in the grave laid the meat stuck a knife in it, pieces of chalk or paint. Basically, the burial was carried out in podwojnych pits or catacombs. Also for this area characterized by a particular form of cookware-pots extending up the neck. This group of finds are mainly concentrated in the area North of the black sea inhabited by these peoples.

Finally, the Slavic group of artifacts represented by a small square huts with a large number of household pits. This area is characterized by the absence of large burial grounds, and the presence of mainly moulded pots. Main place of distribution-Dniester, where he also developed other Slavic culture: Kiev, przeworska. A separate pen and Slavic culture have identified O. M. Pryhodniuk. Chernyakhovskaya culture close to them belonged, although the scientist claimed to not have had a decisive influence on the development of the Slavic elements, because it was too multi-ethnic.

Problems of chronology

In connection with the above mentioned feature of science, there are problems of Dating and chronology of this culture. This is due to the fact that the finds do not always allow to reliably take her artifacts to a particular century. Besides, in this area find many imported products, primarily of Roman origin, whose influence she developed. Therefore, the most acceptable is the method of Dating the burials.

Characteristics

So, this culture describes the diversity of findings, which mention the fact that its formation involved several different elements. Of particular importance is the fact that she was in a zone of Roman influence. Her provincialism, no doubt, contributed to the high level of cultural development and, in turn, stimulated the emergence of more advanced production technologies in the region. Some experts also note the Dacian influence in the area.

Relationship to other cultures

The Chernyakhov period were an important stage in the development of the ancient Slavs. However, they were in very close contact with other ethnic groups, so this culture can only partially reconstruct the ancient Slavic. But she was influenced by and in turn itself influenced other cultures, in which the Slavic element was more pronounced: Przeworsk, kolacinski, Kyiv.

Conclusion

The Decline of culture has occurred due to another migration wave that shook the European continent. This time there was a resettlement of a warlike nomadic tribe of the Huns. This led to the outflow of a considerable part of the population to the West, as there are written sources. However, in forest-steppe and steppe zones there are some populations that were subject to the Huns. But to the North-East in the period preceding the Chernyakhov culture, and then coinciding with her time, continued to exist other Slavic culture-Kiev. Traces of it are well preserved. Archaeologists have found burial grounds, dwellings, household items and even treasures.

Significance

The Chernyakhov period of development is important because it is one of the first steps in the history of the early Slavs. It covers quite a large territorial space, including a number of Russian regions: Belgorod and Kursk. However, he has access to the history of other peoples of that time: the Germans, the Celts, Scythians and others. In addition, this period bears clear signs of the late Roman, the black sea influences, which allows to study the late stages of development of these regions. Therefore, as described in the article culture is actively studied before the revolution, in Soviet times, her analysis continues in our days. The Chernyakhov culture house, for example, periodically performs activities for preservation of traditional folk cultural traditions that should support the interest in antiquity.
