In the early 20th century Chavchavadze was considered the most famous national figure in Georgia. This article presents his brief biography. So, let's start.
The Hero of this article received a degree in law at St. Petersburg University. But due to the “war stories” in 1861 the young man had to leave from an educational institution.
At the beginning of 1864 Ilia Chavchavadze was promoted to assistant Governor-General and went on a business trip to Kutaisi province. The Prince was to define the relationship between peasants and landowners.
The next four years, Chavchavadze acted as peace mediator in Tiflis province. He also worked as a judge in this County until 1874. In addition, Ilya has headed the society for the spreading literacy among the Georgian population. In 1906 the poet was elected a member of the state Council from the nobility. Throughout his political activities and fought for the autonomy of Georgia. In this regard, against the Prince acted as members of the RSDLP, and the authorities of the Russian Empire.
At the end of August 1907, Ilia Chavchavadze, whose art will be described below, traveled together with his wife Olga. The couple rode in an open carriage from Tbilisi to Saguramo. Near Tsitsamuri they were stopped by a gang of Highly Berbichashvili (Imeretia, Ivan Inashvili, Paul Aptsiauri Giorgi Khizanishvili). Each member of the criminal gang were armed. Chavchavadze addressed the gang: "don't shoot, I'm Ilya”. His replied: “that is why we are forced to open fire". Then came the sound of a gunshot.
Vakhtang Guruli in his book cited the opinion of one of the largest doctors of that time named Iashvili. The latter, though was a coroner or medical examiner, but criticized the official autopsy. According to Iashvili, a shot was fired back but not the front. That is, the fire was opened from the second ambush, which didn't even gang Berbichashvili.
Most people believed that the murder of Ilia Chavchavadze was not fully disclosed. Members of the gang Berbichashvili was justified by the bad condition of their arms and said in court that “it went off by itself”. Also they denied the presence of the customer. The widow of the poet asked the court to save the life of the bandits and thereby to honor the memory of a spouse. But, according to the decision “Stolypin Tribunal" of the whole gang (except for hiding Imeretina) was executed.

Currently, some authors are not familiar with the Georgian language and history, believe murderers of the Prince of the Bolsheviks (Russian). For example, according to Professor Anna Geifman, Ilia Chavchavadze headed nationalists fought with the socialists Democrats. The latter was led by the Bolshevik Filipp Makharadze. He is unhappy with criticism of their program by the Prince. This greatly undermined the political positions of the Bolsheviks. Geifman considered the main cause of the murder Chavchavadze its immense popularity as a person and writer. All this Anna shifted on the political activities of Elijah G., considering that he took away the peasants from radical socialism.
This is actually not true. If the Professor knew the history of Georgia, you wouldn't make such erroneous conclusions. First, the nationalists in those days called supporters not Chavchavadze and his opponent Nikoladze. Secondly, the socialist-Democrats are not shared then the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks. Third, party Ilya Grigoryevich was marginal and did not win the election.
There were other versions. For example, the social Democrats considered the organizer of murder secret police. The motive for the same was made by anti-government stance of the poet and his struggle for the abolition of the death penalty.
1857 – that year, when he began to publish his works of Ilia Chavchavadze. Poems have appeared in various publications: the newspaper «Droeba" log "tsiskari" founded "Sakartvelos Moambe” etc. But the most famous poem of the Prince: “Mother and son”, “Hermit”, “Dmitry Samopozhertvovanie”, “Ghost”, “episode from the life of robbers". Chavchavadze also wrote such stories as “the gallows”, “a Christmas story”, “a Strange story”, “Letters of passer”, “the Story of a beggar”, “the Team of Damiani” etc.
During the life of Ilya Grigorievich on Russian language translated several of his poems. As for the poems, the Russian readers were able to see only with the “Hermit”. By the way, all lifetime poems Chavchavadze, translated into Russian language, were collected in a separate collection. Excerpts from it were published in “journal of Europe”, “a Picturesque Outlook” etc.
Ilya Chavchavadze translated into the native language of Goethe, Schiller, Heine, Turgenev, Lermontov and Pushkin. He also did this in collaboration with other authors. For example, together with Ivan Machabeli translated into Georgian ‘King Lear”.
Ilya Chavchavadze was an internationalist. For many years he defended discriminated against the Armenian population of Georgia. Sometimes he had to risk it for the sake of their own lives. But the poet considered the Georgians a single proletarian nation, and princes – the revolutionary avant-garde. Despite the fact that Chavchavadze Tbilisi was headed by land Bank, he, too, considered themselves to be proletarians, singing them in his own work. Also Ilya Grigoryevich led the fight against the Armenian, Ossetian, Russian, Turkish, etc. of the bourgeoisie. In 1902, a Russian translation appeared his article “crying stones and Armenian scientists”. She made a lot of noise. In this regard, against the hero of this article was not only the Armenian bourgeoisie, but also left social Democrats.
In 1895-1896 Ilia Chavchavadze, whose biography is presented above, was led by the magazine "Iberia". There he published seven poems of the poet Soso. Young Stalin wrote under this pseudonym when he was in Seminary. Creativity Chavchavadze had a great influence on the future head of the Soviet Union. Stalin, with certain reservations also believed his people unified proletarian nation. And his thesis about the intensification of the class struggle as the arrival of communism and socialism spread at all, but Georgians. In an interview film Director Michael Aurelia, Stalin called Chavchavadze one of the most important writers at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
