Yeletsky and Lebedyansky diocese: history and modernity

The Policy of the Russian Orthodox Church since the enthronement of Metropolitan Kirill to the Patriarchal dignity was marked by large-scale reform of administrative management. Major diocesan institutions began to break up into small independent Episcopal centres, and joins them in the Archdiocese. As a result of these actions as part of the Moscow Patriarchate has considerably increased the number of Episcopal pulpits. The Emergence of the Episcopal centre in Yelets

The First Episcopal see in Yelets was founded in the early twentieth century by Imperial decree at the request of the Holy Synod. Bishops wore the vicar of status, that is, had the subsidiary and dependent position relative to the main center, which for ELCA was then the Oryol Department. However, its ruling Bishop ordered the vicar instead of Yelets, where he was to be determined by the Synod, lived in the eagle, situated Dace as needed. So, the Vicariate was not functioning, and the vicar performed the role of assistant Orlowski Bishop for all diocesan matters. All this happened in August 1906, when it was established the Vicariate. The Synod of this state of Affairs put up to 1918, when it was again determined that the vicar of Yelets was in his Cathedral city, and is directly involved in the management of its subordinate parishes.

The Position of Yelets Department in the Soviet Union

Political events in Russia after 1917, and resulting from them the ecclesiastical turmoil destroyed the established system of Church government. Hitherto uniform body began to splinter into independent currents and factions. So there was the renovation of the structure, supported at first by the Soviet power, and reactionary, far-right promonarchist enterprises, the same power pricesmovies. In the middle was more or less reasonable (especially after 1927, when it was published the Declaration of Metropolitan Sergius of loyalty to the Soviet government), the Patriarchal Church, in opposition to which there was a numerous clergy. Similar to one of these groups, Eletskiy Vicariate in 1922, at the diocesan meeting of the clergy in the person of the clergy decided on the establishment of an independent Autocephalous Church. Its head was Bishop Nicholas (Nikolsky). At this step, the clergy decided, in order to avoid the merger with the reformed structures of the Renovationists, whose Church organization at that time was official and took a Pro-Soviet position. However, the newly formed Church faced great opposition from the Soviet authorities, who in response to the decision of the diocese to move to self-regulation responded with arrests of activists of the clergy. Bishop Nicholas was exiled in Zadonsk, where he continued to manage the remains preserved him faithful priests and laity. The final destruction of the diocesan structure in Yelets had in the 1937 – the brutal anti-religious persecution in the Soviet Union.

Finding an independent diocesan status

After the change in the religious policy of the Soviet Union, and especially after the restructuring, the life of the Church in Yelets revived in the composition of the Lipetsk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The Cathedral (this time not the vicar, and an independent) the status of the region was restored by the Holy Synod in may 2013 with the name “Yeletsky and Lebedyansky the diocese”. Yelets and Lebedyansky diocese deaneries and parishes

Today Yelets Department is a relatively large group of parishes. According to official data, in 2015 to eight deaneries of the diocese, there are about sixty churches, including the Cathedral of the ascension, and five monasteries, including one male and four female. Religious education
