The Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful, festive and vibrant churches in Russia. For many years during the Soviet era, it was forgotten. Now, restored, it attracts with its grandeur and originality of the thousands of visitors.
The Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg was built in memory of Emperor Alexander II. In the distant 1881 on the spot where later was erected the temple was a tragic event. On March 1, Tsar Alexander II went to the field of Mars, where a military parade. As a result of terrorist act committed by people of I. I. Grinevitsky, the Emperor was mortally wounded.
By order of Alexander III on the site of the tragedy was erected the Church of the Savior on spilled Blood, where he was to be regular service for the dead. And stuck behind the temple the name of the Savior on Blood, the official name of the Church of the Resurrection.
To select the best project for the construction of the temple was declared an architectural competition. It was attended by the most eminent architects.
