Nikitskie Vorota square in the historical center of Moscow

In the center of Moscow, near the Kremlin is the heart of Presnensky district. Its territory is the area Nikitsky gate. Historical information about the area

The Area of the Nikitsky gate in Moscow was formed in the 15-16 centuries. In those years here passed the road from the gates of the White city to Novgorod. In 1582 near White city was built Nikitsky monastery, named after its founder Nikita Zakharieva. At the end of the 16th century earthen ramparts were replaced with stone, and at the entrance to the White city put the pass-gate and called Nikita.

Moscow was built, the building material is not enough, at the end of the 18th century city walls at the gate was dismantled, the vacant area called the Nikitsky gate. The territory began to build wooden houses, but the fire in 1812 destroyed them. Then in the square and adjacent areas began to erect buildings from stone.

In the Autumn of 1917 in the fighting between troops of the red Army and cadets, some houses were destroyed. When I finished the Patriotic war, part of the old buildings were also demolished, but most of the buildings of the 17th-19th centuries was saved.

Church of ascension

According to the General plan of Moscow developed in 1940, the Church of the ascension, located on the area of Nikitsky gate had to be demolished. But because of the war plans was postponed, and the Church remained in place. It was rebuilt several times.

The First stone building was built in the late 17th century on the orders of Natalia Naryshkina. In a hundred years during the reign of Catherine the great near the temple was delivered to the house of Prince Grigory Potemkin. On his orders, the Church began to rebuild the Cathedral which he wanted to name in honor of the Preobrazhensky regiment. After his death the construction work was stopped. Attempts to reopen it continued until 1812, but did not succeed.

In 1931, the Church of the ascension (Presnensky district) has closed. Property was looted or destroyed, the bell tower was dismantled. But the memory of that in the vestibule of the unfinished Church were married Pushkin and Natalia Goncharova, were not allowed to take the decision to demolish the Cathedral. Finally it was completed in 1945. Its architecture is designed in the style of classicism. The building is decorated with lateral porticoes with thrones inside. Church of Theodore Sugita

Temple Theodore Sugita is in the yard and it is almost invisible from the square. According to available archival documents it can be assumed that in the 15th century there was a wooden Church, burned in 1547 during a fire. New details have appeared in historical documents of the Romanov dynasty. In the mid-17th century Nikitsky gate hospital was founded Fedorovskiy monastery, the Church was restored. It long time was kept the icon of the Smolensk mother of God. In 1812 the Church was damaged by fire and was finally restored in 1873.

The Church is known for the fact that her parishioner was Generalissimo A. V. Suvorov. His parents are buried in the cemetery belonging to the Church. In 20-ies of the last century the Church was closed, the tower and the bell tower was demolished. In the 80-ies it was decided to open a Museum of Suvorov and started restoration work. In 1991 it returned in the possession of the Orthodox Church, then restored the five domes and the bell tower.

Fountain "Natalia and Alexander”

Nikitsky gate – the area on which stands a beautiful fountain «Natalia and Alexander”. It is made in the form of a rotunda, in which are bronze statues of Alexander Pushkin and Natalia Goncharova.

In the 90 years the theater was closed for restoration, and in 1999 it housed the theatre “corner”. Currently, the theatre holds productions of musicals, dramas, poetic conceptions.
