One of the most famous places that is worth a visit for all tourists traveling in Mexico is the ancient city of Chichen Itza. In translation its name means "Mouth of the well of the water witches" or "the Place near the well Itza tribe". This place is mysterious, very colorful and even a little ominous.
In the past the city was the political and cultural center of the Maya-Toltec civilization. And now, becoming one of the world heritage of UNESCO, attracts huge number of tourists. Estimated every year, this archaeological site is visited by over a million people. The huge popularity of Chichen Itza was acquired not only due to the fact that is quite well preserved. It has become the quintessence of religious beliefs and conceptions about the universe and the world of the Mayan people. A special influx of tourists occurred in December 2012. Believing in an ancient prophecy, many followers of the famous calendar flocked to Chichen-Itza, wanting to "meet" end of the world among the ancient structures of the Maya.
To Reliably describe the history of the city is quite difficult, as manuscripts that describe ancient events of Chichen Itza, almost gone - they were destroyed by Spanish conquerors. Archaeologists believe that people first began to settle in this place since the fourth century, and the first buildings began to be erected around the VI - VII centuries. At the same time and originated the urban community. Till the X century Chichen Itza was home of the Maya. And by the end of X century the city was conquered by invaders from Central Mexico by the Toltecs practiced sacrifice and serve the cult of the Feathered Serpent. They did not destroy Chichen-Itza, and Vice versa - is firmly rooted in it. During the reign of the Toltecs, the city became one of the most powerful settlements of the Yucatan Peninsula. Since the XI century the Toltecs made it the capital of his Empire. Over time it gradually changed and increasingly acquired Toltec features. The peculiar symbiosis of two cultures made the city truly unique. For unknown reasons, at the end of XII century it was abandoned and overgrown with jungle. Only in 1920, archaeologists revealed to the world its mysterious structures.

The Most famous building of ancient city is the pyramid of Kukulkan (or otherwise - the pyramid El Castillo). In 2007, the year she entered the list of the seven new wonders of the world. Pyramid of Kukulkan Chichen Itza was built in the XI century by joint efforts of the Maya and the Toltec. They erected a Grand monument dedicated to the God of rain and the wind, Quetzalcoatl, who had the appearance of the feathered serpent with a human head. The Mayans called the deity Kukulkan, meaning "feathered serpent". This structure was created based on the cosmological and calendar knowledge of the Mayans and the Toltecs. In height it reaches 24 m and its faces facing all four cardinal directions. The top of the pyramid is the area, in ancient times, used for offering sacrifices. To the platform are four steep and wide staircases, each with 91 steps, which together (along with the upper platform) gives the symbolic number 365, equal to the number of days in the solar year. On each side of the pyramid has 18 sections of the terraces. This number is also symbolic. It is equal to the number of months in the Mayan calendar. In addition, each of the four sides of the pyramid are located at 52 stone. They represent the coincidence of a particular calendar cycles of the Toltecs - day shiaparelli and day tonalpohualli - occurring every 52 years. Interestingly, inside the sanctuary is another nine-pyramid, the entrance to which is found recently. There is a relic - the "Jaguar Mat" and a statue of "Chuck-Mool".
The Second unique attraction in the city of Chichen Itza in Mexico is a famous Temple of the Warriors. It is located right behind the pyramid of El Castillo and is a monumental five-step pyramid, reaching a height of 11,5 m It is from all sides surrounded by columns made in the form of Toltec warriors. That is why the pyramid got its name. At its top is the temple, consisting of halls and shrines. The temple is an impressive staircase, surrounded by balustrades. The entrance to the sanctuary mark, carved in stone, the snake. The temple is a stone altar resembling a low table whose legs are made in the form of human figures. Here is the ugly stone idol of the deity of the Toltec Chuck-Moola - reclining demon, holding in his hands and belly pressed to the large empty dish. It is believed that on this dish the priests burned the hearts of his victims.
Not only the pyramids of Chichen Itza in Mexico deserve the attention of many tourists. To the North of the monument, the El Castillo is another mysterious attraction, called"Sacred cenote" (or - "Pit of death"). This karst formation, unlike the other wells, did not serve Toltecs source of fresh water. In it the priests were thrown the victims, praising their gods. "Well of death" had a depth of 50 m and was considered a kind of portal to another world. In the period from 1910 - 1925, he was investigated by Herbert Thompson, who drew from it a large number of antiquities: jewellery, ceramics, rubber, obsidian and, of course, many human remains.
In Chichen Itza there is another karst education Stalock cenote, located to the South of the Temple of Kukulkan. He, in contrast to the "Pit of death" was used by the Toltecs solely as a source of drinking water. Later scientist G. Thompson explored and another interesting pyramid of Chichen Itza - Ossuary (aka the Crypt). She, as well as the temple of KUKULCAN was built with stairs on all four sides. Interestingly, in the centre of the pyramid there is a deep vertical hole leading into a natural cave. In it, Thompson found several interesting artifacts of jade, and human remains.
Another sinister attraction of Chichen Itza is Tzompantli. It is a platform T-shaped, whose walls are decorated with relief images of skulls. Tzompantli was Used to demonstrate the goals of the victims, and prisoners of war. To the West of the Temple of Skulls is one of the nine Golf ball, affecting its immense size. Its length is 168 m and a width of about 70 m. it is believed that he built it in the year 864 B. C. In the East of the site is the Temple of the Jaguar, which includes two sanctuaries. The upper sanctuary is located on the wall bounding the site. Probably from here the nobles watched the progress of the ball game. Lower sanctuary is located on the outer side of the site. Near its entrance stands a monument - the figure of the Jaguar. In the Northern part of the Playground is another building - the Temple of the Bearded Man. To the front opening, separated by two pillars, a staircase. Inside the temple is decorated with relief in the center of which is the figure of a man with a beard.
South of the area to play the ball are even several attractions, including the Red house is a building whose facade is painted red and Caracol (translated as "snail shell") is a tower built on the platform. It is believed that it was used by the Mayans for observing astronomical objects, calculate the days of equinox and summer solstice. So called Caracol Observatory. South of the tower is another powerful structure of the Toltecs, which the Spaniards called "the nunnery" because of its majestic and impregnable. In height it reaches 20 m, and its base is 70 m by 35 m. to the entrance to the monastery leads up a wide staircase. The building itself is decorated with masks of the God chak and various relief patterns.
