Trends in the development of computer technology obvious – harmonization, simplification for companies (reducing overheads) and the combination of many devices in a single package. There is nothing surprising in the fact that many users are newcomers don't even know what a PCI bus. Those who found the time of the formation of the IBM-compatible computers based on 286, 386 and other processors, no doubt, remember the abundance of different tires and hardware interfaces used in computer systems of the time. This is the famous 8-bit ISA bus, then its completion VLB (known as VESA), PCI bus connector Intel specialized for soft-modems, AGP and so on, they all, with rare exceptions, was needed. But currently, motherboards striking “poverty” - one PCI Express bus, however, different revisions and with different number of signal lines. Alas, for such a unification to pay, literally, have to the end user. Even if there is, for example, high-quality sound card which is a PCI device, it is simply nowhere to connect the (inconvenient adapters don't count) and you have to buy a bus or even go to, frankly, flawed, integrated solution. The situation is reminiscent of the story of “violent” translation of all from AGP to PCI-E.

What is so famous for the PCI bus? Her story began in 1991, when with the advent of powerful processors Pentium, it became clear that the common 8-bit ISA cannot provide an acceptable speed of interaction of all system components. Recall that at that time there was neither DMI nor Hyper Transport, and communication components on the motherboard were performed via the system bus. Although attempts were made to overcome the limitations of ISA, for example, and there was a VESA mount, but because of restrictions they did not take root.

In 1992, Intel was presented to the PCI bus version 1.0, based on an open standard. Its clock speed was huge at the time 33 MHz (which simplified the scaling of the CPU frequency), depending on the hardware implementation was supported by 32 or 64 bits (compare with the 8-bits ISA). The voltage of the data lines was 5 and 3.3 V, while the capacity was 133 MB. And, most importantly, was implemented to support Plug & Play (no jumpers!).

In 1993 there appeared an improved version 2.0.

The PCI Bus has gained world fame since 1995 (version 2.1). Depending on implementation, the frequency was 66 MHz. If you are using 64 bit version of this bus was able to transfer 533 MB. Windows 95 came to the rescue, finally, to fully ensure the correct operation of the PCI devices Plug & Play. The signal line is allowed to go from 5V to 3.3 V.

Next was released revision 2.2 - 3.0. Plug in version 2.2 had a “key” that blocks the installation of incompatible voltage devices. 2.3 continues the transition to 3.3 V, so the use of such devices in versions prior to 2.1 (5V) would damage the cards and, sometimes, buses. In 3.0 version 5 volts is no longer used.

In 1997, the PCI had to make room, as the same Intel was released the AGP bus for graphics cards that couldn't reach their full potential at PCI.

Now the PCI bus, as mentioned before, almost never used, replaced by its successor-PCI Express. Software addressing mechanism remains the same, but the physical implementation has undergone significant changes. Changed the number of conductors, the increased operating frequency (along with a decrease in the current). The method of configuring the initiators of a transaction (connected devices) has also changed, allowing more convenient to process their requests to the bus.

By the Way, on some motherboards you can still find the PCI bus connector. However, native support from the chipset and CPU it is not - in this way the implementation uses a special bridge chip that redirects requests PCI to PCI Express.
