Parts of speech – a well-coordinated mechanism, in which there is not a single superfluous element. Surprisingly, in every language, this mechanism is arranged differently. What in one language can be expressed in two or three words, the other would require constructing quite complex sentences. That is why it is extremely important in the study of foreign languages not to approach grammar in a slipshod manner, and to try to understand every rule – because among them no empty and meaningless.

Adjectives list

An adjective is one of the key parts of speech, giving people the opportunity to describe the world. However, it has its own nuances in different languages. This structure, and place in the sentence, and coordination with other parts of speech, and, of course, the functions assigned to the adjective. In this article we will look at and compare the functions of this part of speech in some European languages.

Public properties

So, what features have adjectives? The list is big enough.

First of all, the adjective refers to non-procedural feature of an object. This means that describes a permanent property of a living or nonliving object (a loyal friend, a comfortable home). Non-procedural signs are also called adverbs, but these signs are already does not belong to the subject, and the action (to run fast to draw).

 list of adjectives in Finnish

If the adjective is directly connected with the noun, it must able to adapt to their “head”. In different languages nouns have different categories: number, gender, case, declension. All of these categories adopt them adjectives – a list of categories for them looks exactly the same.

Relations

Also, the adjectives are closely interrelated with other parts of speech, penetrating each other and making it richer. This is evident their relationship to pronouns and numerals. At the junction of these parts of speech at the time, and appeared ordinals, answering the question “who?” and relative and interrogative pronouns “what” and “who”. Should be considered separately describing the subject through the action of the sacrament, which gave birth to verbs and adjectives. The list of these forms is very large (sailing ship, crouching tiger). The sacrament is also consistent with the object and it provides a procedural basis.

The Transformation of the adjective

The Secondary nature of the adjective is emphasized by way of his education. It is usually formed from nouns and focus on some key property or characteristic. So, the raspberry gave us a crimson color, and the angle-angular gait. Adjectives that indicate the identity of the subject of anyone – the most striking example of the close connection of this part of speech from nouns. Such flexibility differs in the Russian language, where possessive adjectives are formed frequently: the book grandfather's-grandfather's book.

In English and German such forms do not exist. In English grandad’s book on the belonging of the book to grandpa's indicates the possessive case of the noun grandad. In German language there is almost identical to the simplified form which is used with proper names: Annas Auto. However, most often this role is fulfilled by a special form of the genitive: das Buch des Grossvaters, while in the first place is the subject, not its owner.

The English language is known for the conversion-complete transition of one part of speech to another without visible changes. Subject to conversion and adjectives & ndash; wet (wet) could easily become a noun with the meaning "moisture". And slim in the meaning of “slim” in a certain context will be the verb “stroiney”.

In the German language similar mechanism turns an adjective into an abstract noun. Schwarz in the value of the “dark” when you add articles will make sense “darkness”. Also it is possible to convert when naming living creatures that have a symptom called producing adjective, der Irre - “mad”, der Taube - “deaf”. The addition of the definite article to the adjective works in French: Le ciel est bleu (the adjective), Le bleu (noun) du ciel. Syntactic function in bleu its place in the sentence, and the presence of the article gives reason to believe le bleu noun. In this case the noun is le bleu, in addition to the main value (indicate the colors-blue, blue), has and others, such as work clothes, blue shirt, boot, bruise blue.

Borrowing of adjectives

There are several types of foreign borrowing of adjectives, depending on their degree of adaptation to the realities of the host language. In this regard, we can distinguish several of such types:

  • Full tracing paper – the word does not undergo any changes, does not take the declension system of the language. Typically, this includes the specific terms of the style (retro, Rococo), as well as sophisticated colour shades (Marsala, Indigo).
  • Suffixation-was the most voluminous group of borrowed adjectives. Interesting is the fact that find counterparts in the host language and foreign suffixes of adjectives. The list is large enough. French suffixes,- aire, -ique and -if changing -ar - natural and supplemented by the suffix-tion. Also the popular suffix-MATIC: legendaire -legendary; diplomatique - diplomatic. The Greek suffix -IK in the Russian language enters -icny, -MATIC: hygienic, photogenic and heroic.

The Great and powerful adjectives

List of adjectives of Russian language is very high due to the derivational potential of this part of speech.

Function of the adjectives in the sentence – or determination (He reads the good book), or part of a compound nominal predicate (I today very energetic). In the first case, the adjective is placed before noun, in the second – after it.

a List of adjectives of Russian language

For functions and derivational potential, it is possible to divide all adjectives. The list consists of three items:

  1. Quality – indicating a direct symptom that can be felt by the senses (red, loud, salty). Such adjectives change by degrees of comparison (louder-loudest), and may also have a short form (important, severe). If there is a need to strengthen the value of the adjective can be repeated: blue-blue sky. Qualitative adjectives are formed from adverbs and abstract nouns: beautiful – and beautiful – beauty.
  2. Relative – described by linking the object with another object or concept (aluminum-made of aluminum, sewing – designed for sewing). Have no degrees of comparison, no short forms, and are unable to form adverbs.
  3. Possessive-to indicate the belonging of anyone (human or animal) – grandpa's tobacco, cleft cabbage.

Sometimes there is a transfer of an adjective from a relative category to quality. In this case, changing the value of: Fox tail-Fox-smile (meaning cunning, deceitful).

An Important characteristic of Russian adjectives is the ability to decline – change the gender, number and case in accordance with the governing noun (brick house-brick wall-brick columns).

Shakespeare's Language

There are some features, which, unlike Russian, do not have English adjectives. The list is small but sufficient.

Unlike Russian, English adjectives are completely uninflected. Red fox, red flowers, red wall – in all these expressions the word “red” remains as is, regardless of the number and type of noun.

English adjectives list

Stand out a qualitative and relative adjectives in the English language. The list of features is almost the same as in Russian, except for one fact – English adjectives have no short form.

Also an adjective can go into an abstract noun (the mysterious – something mysterious). Sick (sick) when you add an article go into the sick (patients, patients). As in English, the adjective in the role definition will be preceded by a noun (an empty house), and the role of the predicate – to enter into it (The house is empty).

The reasons for the lack of the possessive adjectives previously discussed.

The Language of Goethe

A lot of common features have English and German adjectives – a list of their features are almost identical. However, there is one major difference, combining German adjectives with the Russian, – is the ability to lean. Ein billiger Haus – “cheap” in the plural becomes billige Häuser. The end change the gender, number and case of the adjective (guten Kindes – a good child, gutem Kind – a good child, guten Kind – a good child).

German adjectives list

Depending on whether we are talking about a specific or random subject, adjectives inflect weak (der gute Vater – this good father), strong (guter Vater – a good father) or mixed (ein guter Vater – some good father).

Language of love

A Lot in common with German French adjectives – the list of similarities is sufficient. They change genders (Il est joli – it's beautiful, elle est jolie – she's beautiful) and numbers (Le livre intéressant – an interesting book, les livres intéressants – an interesting book), possessive declension have not. They also vary depending on degrees of comparison (Grand – Plus grand-Le plus grand).

French adjectives list

An Interesting feature of the French adjectives – the ability to change the value depending on, before a noun or after it they are. Un homme brave — a brave man, while un brave homme-a good man.

Serenity

List of adjectives in Finnish is very large and is complex. As in Russian, adjectives agree with nouns in number and case (and only them in Finnish from 14 to 16).

suffixes adjectives list

Some adjectives do not change in cases,

Eri — miscellaneous;

Viime — last;

Ensi — next;

Koko — intact.

Adjective may also stand before the modified word: kaunis talo — a beautiful house; and after him — on kaunis Talo. — the House is beautiful. There are also degrees of comparison (iloinen — cheerful; iloisempi more fun, more cheerful; iloisin the most fun, fun).

Common and different

So, in all considered languages, adjectives perform the functiondetermine qualities of a subject. The agreement with the subject in different languages has its own characteristics. List of adjectives in Finnish and Russian languages will have common and distinctive features. The same applies to other languages, despite the closeness of their vocabulary and grammar.
