Stripes – what's that? The history of appearance and appointment

Stripes – the insertion of strips of fabric on the side seams shaped press officers, generals and marshals, as well as representatives of the Cossack troops, and differing in color from the basic colors.

First stripes

The Story of stripes originates from ancient times (VIII century BC). It is believed that if the Scythian war began to use leather strips covering the seams on the pants, as a distinctive sign.

The Society of the Scythians had a clear division according to the nature of life from pastoralists and craftsmen to soldiers-swordsmen and “Royal” of the Scythians. Last and wore leather trousers, often trimmed with Golden ornaments stripes. It was a sign of belonging to high class.

Stripes Cossacks

The Tradition of the Scythians wear stripes, according to one version of history, and was adopted by the Cossacks. But in the Cossack circles goes another version of the legend on this account, according to which the stripes on the pants Cossacks appeared as:

The uniforms of the Cossacks became not only the hallmark, talking about belonging to the Cossacks, but also a kind of symbol of national identity, independence and liberty. And the color of the stripes, it was possible to determine which army Cossack applies.

The Amur, Astrakhan, Transbaikal and Ussuri Cossacks wore pants with stripes of yellow. The don and the Yenisei Cossacks the color of the stripes was red. The Kuban and Ural – crimson. The Cossacks of Orenburg bore the stripes light blue. Siberian Cossacks sported pants with stripes of scarlet. From the Terek Cossacks stripes were replaced with light blue piping.

A More precise belonging to a particular army was determined by the color of his uniform, the epaulets and the colour of the crown cap.

The Appearance of stripes in the Russian army

For the First time the stripes have adorned the uniforms of the Russian army in 1783 during the reforms, General field Marshal G. A. Potemkin, who determined that the stripes – additional attributes for uniforms, allowing to establish the identity of military command posts in peacetime. At the time of the war the stripes were abolished, as on the battlefield, they unmasked the commander.

However, Paul I, took the throne in 1796, decided to implement reforms in the Russian army, and the first thing they touched the officers. The prevailing image of the officer's life was pretty carefree during the reign of Catherine II (the officers most of the service was carried out in visits to social events), under Paul I has changed dramatically. Adopted new Military regulations forced the officers to do their direct job responsibilities. The changes were made and uniforms. In particular, the Emperor decided that the stripes – “not modern,” and the whole form, adopted after the Potemkin reforms, disguised in this case the entire Russian army in outfits in the likeness of the army of Frederick the Great, king of Prussia, forcing the officers to wear powdered wigs.

In 1803, Alexander I, which took place on the throne, is killed in a Palace coup of Paul I, returned the stripes to the army. First, the changes affected the uniform of the lancers, and later the rest of the troops.

Stripes in the red and Soviet armies

In the worker-peasant KA tuxedo pants introduced for senior officers, from the General. The original color of the stripes depended on the type of troops:

• Red wore army generals of all the armed forces.
• Blue & ndash; generals aviation.
• Crimson – the generals the troops respect, technical and quartermaster corps, the corps of engineers.

In 1943, for the generals of the NKVD introduced the stripes in cornflower blue. For the internal troops – maroon and guards – green.

But in the year of the great Victory (1945) different colors of stripes were replaced by a single – red.

For modern generals of the army, nothing has changed. Red double stripes (photo below) is still their “hallmark”.

The Younger generation of military cadets and cadets from childhood accustomed to the stripes. On the uniform pants they are presented in the form of a single strip of blue or red flowers.
