Stanislav Grof became world-famous thanks to the studies on the effects of LSD, altered States of human consciousness. For a scientist, it became obvious that consciousness is much more than described in the literature in medicine and psychology. This determined the further course of his scientific activity. He was actively engaged in the study of advanced States of consciousness. Since 1960 a few years Stanislav Grof was engaged in legal work with psychedelic drugs. Until 1967, he studied their impact in Czechoslovakia, then in America up to that time as psychedelic drugs were not banned – until 1973.

During this time, scientist have spent about 2500 sessions using LSD, and gathered more than 1000 protocols of conducting such studies under the guidance of their colleagues. Stanislav Grof all the books devoted to the results of this and subsequent research in the field of altered States of consciousness.

"Esalen" - center for humanistic alternative education

The Institute "Esalen" was founded in 1962 by Stanford graduates Michael Murphy and Dick price. Their goal was to support alternative methods of studying human consciousness. This is an educational institution in the land where once lived the Indian tribe "Esalen" - on the Central California coast. It is a very picturesque place: on one side the Pacific ocean on the other - the mountains.

The Institute "Esalen" has played a key role in the heyday of the public, "the Movement for human development", the ideological basis of which are the concepts of personal growth and the realization of extraordinary potential opportunities available at each, but not completely solved. Innovation, focusing on the connection between mind and body, constant experimentation in terms of personal consciousness has led to the emergence of many ideas that later became mainstream.

In 1973, Grof received an advance fee, which gave the opportunity to write the first book. At the invitation of Michael Murphy to work on it he moved to Esalen. He offered to settle down in a house on the ocean. It had a beautiful view with a panoramic view of 180 degrees. He arrived there one year, and lived and worked there 14 years, until 1987.

1975 was marked for Stanislaw that he met Christine, his future wife. From that moment began their personal relationships, closely intertwined with the professional.

Holotropic breathing

Between 1975 and 1976 the joint efforts of Stanislav and Christina Grof created an innovative method, which was given the name "holotropic breathing". This made it possible to enter an expanded state of consciousness without the use of LSD and other psychedelic substances.

At the same time, they began to use a new method in their seminars. Between 1987 and 1994, the couple held a session of holotropic breathing for about 25,000 people. According to the authors, this unique method of self-discovery and personal growth.

In consequence of this method was the basis for holotropic therapy, sessions which the scientist is actively practiced. He also led training courses for practicing transpersonal psychologists.

Together with his wife Grof travelled the world with his seminars and lectures, talking about transpersonal psychology and results of researches of consciousness. For many years he supported the survivors of psychoboy crisis - episodes of expanded awareness.

Achievements and contributions to the advancement of science

Stanislav Grof - known throughout the world as a modern reformer of psychiatry and the brightest representative of transpersonal psychology.
