For a scientist, it became obvious that consciousness is much more than described in the literature in medicine and psychology. This determined the further course of his scientific activity. He was actively engaged in the study of advanced States of consciousness. Since 1960 a few years Stanislav Grof was engaged in legal work with psychedelic drugs. Until 1967, he studied their impact in Czechoslovakia, then in America up to that time as psychedelic drugs were not banned – until 1973.

The Institute "Esalen" was founded in 1962 by Stanford graduates Michael Murphy and Dick price. Their goal was to support alternative methods of studying human consciousness. In 1973, Grof received an advance fee, which gave the opportunity to write the first book. At the invitation of Michael Murphy to work on it he moved to Esalen. He offered to settle down in a house on the ocean. It had a beautiful view with a panoramic view of 180 degrees. He arrived there one year, and lived and worked there 14 years, until 1987.
1975 was marked for Stanislaw that he met Christine, his future wife. From that moment began their personal relationships, closely intertwined with the professional.
Between 1975 and 1976 the joint efforts of Stanislav and Christina Grof created an innovative method, which was given the name "holotropic breathing". This made it possible to enter an expanded state of consciousness without the use of LSD and other psychedelic substances.
At the same time, they began to use a new method in their seminars. Between 1987 and 1994, the couple held a session of holotropic breathing for about 25,000 people. According to the authors, this unique method of self-discovery and personal growth.
