After the collapse of the USSR between Russia and Ukraine a number of political and geopolitical disputes in the first place ownership of the Crimea, Sevastopol, as well as placed on the black sea Navy of the Soviet Army. Surfaced also serious economic problems, in particular the question of energy supply of individual European States, due to the fact that most gas and oil pipelines from Russia to Europe was routed via the territory of Ukraine. To resolve these and other disputes, countries had to establish diplomatic relations.
The Beginning of diplomatic relations between the former fraternal republics was initiated in August 1991, when Moscow from Kiev was sent the first diplomatic mission. It was headed by Plenipotentiary representative of Ukraine in Russia, Kryzhanivsky V. P., which will subsequently become the first Ambassador Extraordinary.
In February 1992 in Minsk of the Russian Federation and Ukraine signed a bilateral Protocol on the approval of diplomatic relations, the development of cultural, political and economic relations of both countries, as well as the expansion of friendly relations between their peoples and citizens. After signing the Protocol in the same year the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow has started its official activities.

Administrative building is a historic building on the foundations of the middle of XVIII century, which until the 1880s had a view of the mansion in the Empire style. In 1880-1890-ies the building was reconstructed specially for the new owner – of count Alexei Uvarov, a famous Russian archaeologist and historian, grandson of the last Hetman of Zaporizhia army. As a result of restructuring carried out by the architects Bykovsky M. K. and Soloviev S. U., the building received a new look and noble eclectic decor. In 1919 the building was partially destroyed by the explosion of a bomb planted by anarchists, but in 1922, restored by the architect V. Mayat.

Despite recent developments in Ukraine and the aggravation of relations with Russia, the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow continues its activities. In March this year, the extraordinary Ambassador of Ukraine in Russia elchenko V. Y. was temporarily withdrawn from the Embassy for consultations on the situation in the Crimean Peninsula.
After the defeat of the Russian Embassy in Kiev in June 2014, retaliatory actions took place near the building of the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow. Today, the Embassy of Ukraine and Russia are heavily protected in order to avoid new riots and to ensure safety of members of diplomatic missions.
At the present time from the Ukrainian side considers a question on the full termination of diplomatic relations with Russia, but, as noted by the Deputy head of AP of Ukraine Valeriy Chaly, the Ukrainian authorities are carefully studying the possible consequences of such a political step. Anyway, whatever that policy, the fraternal peoples of Russia and Ukraine will continue to support the relationship. Moreover, many citizens of these countries are linked by ties of kinship.
