Incorrectly adjusted engine valves of VAZ-2101 can lead to irreparable consequences. First and foremost, the loss incurred directly by the motorist who will suffer from the increased fuel consumption and loss of dynamic performance of the car. But if all these points are not particularly significant influence on the technical condition of the engine, the rapid wear of the valves and tappets may lead to failure of the timing system. To avoid this, the valve control should take place in a timely manner, correctly and competently, so before performing the appropriate adjustment of the valves you need to first examine the theoretical part. This will be discussed in the article.

So, first you need to have at hand everything you need. Adjustment valves can not take place without appropriate tools: set of open end wrenches and flat spanners, a few screwdrivers, spare gaskets under valve cover, wrench for cranking and a special probe with a thickness of 0.15 mm. All these tools have to be in a home workshop. Also should find out from the manuals how to adjust the valves, and it would be better to write this on a sheet of paper or print with digital media.

And don't forget that adjusting the valves is when the engine is cold as when heated the metal expands, and this leads to inaccurate results.

Now proceed directly to adjustment. After removing the valve cover of the engine, rotate the crankshaft so that the matched marks on the engine block to the front (on the cover) and the camshaft sprocket. With this action you set the fourth cylinder of the engine at top dead center on the compression stroke. According to the technical documentation, adjustment of valves shall be carried out on 3 and 4 cylinder, namely, valve No. 6 and No. 8 (counting from the front sprocket). You need to try to stick a feeler gauge between camshaft and Cam. If everything went OK and probe goes between them with little effort, adjusting tappets is not needed.

If you want, if you are not quite sure of the correct adjusting, you can repeat the whole process from the beginning.
