The Science of language is complex and involves a large number of sections. One of them is lexicology, the object of study of which is the vocabulary of the language, that is, all the words that are used by native speakers. Often this science is also called the vocabulary.

studying vocabulary

General concept

Consider studying the vocabulary. This word refers to all words that form the vocabulary of a language. The term can also refer to the words present in the speech of an individual he knows, understands, and uses in the dialogue and the letter.

The science of lexicology is complex and interesting, because the object of her study are all the words:

  • Public (otherwise – commonly used).
  • Dialects.
  • Professional words and terms.
  • The Jargon and Argo.

Some words can have several meanings, as many meanings, others have pronounced stylistic colouring and are used only in certain styles.

Mention the fact that studying vocabulary, it should be noted that the basic unit, which is dealing with this science, is the word – a combination of a number of sounds which has a certain value. So, saying “house” (that is, pronouncing the three sounds), we understand that we are talking about a building with a roof, floor and walls, and intended for people's lives. Therefore, “house” is a word, it is studying this science.

Russian vocabulary

The Lexical meaning of the word called the meaning that is embedded in the sound shell. In the Russian vocabulary there are many words with multiple meanings – the same sounds arranged in the same sequence, hiding a different meaning. Here is an example:

  • Tail – part of the body of the animal (the dog's Tail was omitted).
  • Tail – the rear part of the vehicle (At the end reigned the fun).

Most Often the basic meaning is called direct, others are portable. Therefore, considering the question that is studying vocabulary, it can be noted that in the area of attention of this science can find all the meanings of the words of the language, both direct and portable. The phenomenon of multiple meanings is called polysemy, the Russian language is a big part of language units has several meanings.

Homonymy

In the area of study of the science of language, vocabulary (lexicology), and includes the words-homonyms, they have different meanings but are pronounced and spelled the same. For example:

  • Onion (vegetable) grown in the garden.
  • A Young warrior from childhood, knew how to hold a bow (weapon).

The Word “bow” and “bow” have different meanings but are spelled and pronounced identically, they are homophones and are included in the vocabulary of the language. To understand the meaning of homonyms can only be out of context. So, having heard the word “bow”, we won't understand what was going on – of the edible plants or the terrible weapons. The value will become clear only in the sentence or text.

studying vocabulary

Paronyms

No less interesting and the words-paronyms, which are also studied by lexicology. Their peculiarity is that they have different value in the writing and in oral speech are not the same, but very similar. Therefore, some native speakers can be confused. For example:

  • Caller   membership.
  • To Provide – present.
  • Human – human.

In the speech it is important to truly learn to use paronyms, to understand their meaning do not need a context, because these words are different, although very similar. Even a competent person may sometimes face a difficulty, in this case it is better to test yourself in the dictionary.

vocabulary of the science of language

A very simple example, nevertheless that's causing the error – to put on and to wear. How to use these words?

  • Put – itself.
  • Dress – to another person.

Therefore, in the sentence "Mary (wear, wore) a warm coat" one should choose a verb “put”. But if you change a little context: “Mary (put, put) sister warm coat", then you must select another paronym, “dressed”.

We have considered that studying vocabulary, and I can conclude that this science is very complex and interesting in the area of her attention included a large number of diverse phenomena, without knowledge of vocabulary, it is impossible to be a competent person to Express their thoughts, to present arguments in the dispute. The more words and their meanings a person knows the better their oral and written language. A person with a rich vocabulary will be able to convey to the recipient any thought. Therefore, the science of words should be studied carefully and conscientiously.
