What you need to always remember?

In English, as in any other language, is the main sentence and secondary. For each of these categories has its own rules. The first thing you need to remember the word order of English is not similar to Russian. Many people who start learning the language, given its small store of knowledge that is an incorrect construction of sentences.

When dealing with more experienced people or native speakers of the language you can get into a pretty awkward situation. For example, the phrase "Yulia goes to the store" in Russian can sound like "the store is Julia." In this change of words there is nothing criminal, but the meaning does not change, but if you literally translate the sentences into English, we get: "Julia is going to the store" (first version) and "The store is going to Julia" (the second option). If a person who knows English language, hear the conversation the last example, it is at best laugh, and at worst will twist a finger at a temple: "Where such a thing to the shops went to Yul?".

Basic rules of word order in English sentence

A very simple scheme for English sentences is: Subject + Predicate + Complement + Circumstance.

As mentioned earlier, the word order can't be changed.

The Subject is one of the two main parts of the sentence that answers the questions who?what? and denotes an object or a person.

The Predicate is the second main part of the sentence. It refers to the action mentioned in the sentence. In English sentences the predicate is always present, in contrast to the Russian. Often it can be expressed using the verb to be, about which many students forget due to the lack of it in their native grammar.

  • I _ each. - I am a friend.
  • Now _ the rain. - It is raining now.

Supplement refers to the secondary parts of the sentence, it refers to the object on which the action of the verb and answers the questions of indirect cases.

Fact is another minor part of the sentence. It can characterize the action or its causes, and to indicate the time and location. Such circumstances as tomorrow, yesterday, at the moment + an adverbial modifier of place can stand at the beginning of the sentence before the subject.

According to the scheme presented above, construction of the simple affirmative sentence in English. Here are some examples:

  • I met him in the Park. - I met him in the park.
  • He helps her with pleasure. - He helps her with pleasure.
  • Now I don't have time. - Now I haven't got any time.

Word Order in English interrogative sentence

With even a slight dip in the English language, you notice that what interrogative constructions there are a number of significant differences (from the usual Slavonic). If in Russian you can ask, just by changing intonation or by placing the end of a phrase of the appropriate sign, here this will not work - you need to completely rebuild a sentence. There are five different types of questions, and each of them has its word order, which you need to know.

What is everyone holding up?

The General question is the basis of. This species is the most simple - you need only to make a slight inversion of words in a sentence and put the first auxiliary or modal verb that will indicate the time and the person. The scheme is: Auxiliary verb + subject + verb + complement?

  • Are you watching TV? - Do you watch TV?
  • Can you help me? - Could you help me?
do You speak English?

Special issues

In English, the word order in the interrogative sentence this type is practically no different from common, it is only necessary to add at the beginning of a word. What? Such issues can be considered more specific, they allow people to learn more real information. All of the main six question words:

    The
  • What (that)? - to clarify the subject matter;
  • Where (where)? - to know;
  • Why (why)? - to determine the cause;
  • How (how)? - to understand the ways;
  • Which (who)? to determine particular person of a few;
  • When (when)? - inquire about the time.

Such questions have the following pattern: a Special word + S (common question)?

  • What are you doing? - What are you doing?
  • Where have I left my phone? - Where I left my phone?

As you can see, the General question is the basis of the future, so to study it we need to allocate more time. English exercises word order in the sentence is common, so finding them is to practice, not difficult. You need to remember that to neglect this point is impossible, because you can forget all the details and subtleties. With the constant grinding of the studied information will be "native", and the word order in the English sentence, the brain will automatically be issued.

Question to the subject

Quite often this kind of "bond" with special issues, and this action is quite logical. In the first place is a special word for What?, which is used when talking about the subject, or Who?, if we talk about someone living. The purpose of this question is to find out the object of the conversation. It has the following scheme: the Subject expressed by the interrogative words What and Who + verb + addition + fact?

  • Who will come to your class? - Who will come to your class?
  • What gets you upset? - What upsets you?

The Important thing to remember on this issue - it has a similar conventional range build, just replace the special subject pronouns.

Alternative and disjunctive questions

The Fourth type of question - alternative. Not difficult to guess, it provides the interviewee the choice of the person. Because definitely it will be composed of the word "or" (or).

The Fifth and final view of the issues of the separation. They are also called "tailed". They have at the end of the structure, which translates to "do you". The first part of the narrative proposal remains unchanged, and the second auxiliary spell the word the right time and in a certain form. If the original sentence was a statement, in the "tail" will be negative, and Vice versa.

These types of interrogative sentences do not have a stable scheme. Why? For example, an alternative question you can bind to any part of the sentence and for each such option will have its own view of the schema. Speaking of dividing sentences, they do not have special differences from the most common phrases that were dismantled at the beginning of the article, the main thing not to forget about the "tail".

  • It is hard to understand you, is not it? - It's hard to understand, isn't it?
  • She is not doing her homework, is she? - She's not doing her homework, isn't it?
  • Is the T-shirt you bought green or pink? - Bought thee t-shirt green or pink?
