Down Syndrome is a genomic pathology. In this pathology in the karyotype of the patient has forty-seven chromosomes because of trisomy in the twenty-first pair. However, there are other forms of this syndrome. As a rule, they are caused by the pernicious influence of the twenty-first pair of chromosomes to the other.
The First description of down syndrome is dated 1866. As you may have guessed, it was named after the doctor who performed the diagnosis. The disease was described, but its cause was established only a century later.

Down Syndrome symptoms

Symptoms and signs are actually a lot. Main features:

- cropped skull;
- person-form;
- children's neck area include skin fold;
- earlobes underdeveloped;
- muscle tone is decreased;
- the back of the head flattened;
- short legs;
- underdeveloped middle phalanges of the fingers;
- abnormalities of the teeth;
the sky has the form of an arch;
- the little finger curved.

This is not an exhaustive list, because the down syndrome has many more features.

the grooves in the language;
- the flattening of the bridge of nose;
- folds on the palms.
- wide but short neck;
- squint;
congenital heart defect;
- chest deformity;
- congenital leukemia and so on.

Down Syndrome: diagnosis

Only the analysis of karyotype provides the ability to accurately diagnose this syndrome. Clinical signs can help only to suspect, but does not really confirm the disease. Diagnosis of down syndrome should be conducted in a timely manner.

The Syndrome in question, in fact occurs very rarely. It is approximately a one in seven hundred births. Today prenatal diagnosis is used, which means that the number of incidents has become even smaller (approximately one to one thousand one hundred).

Not to say that there are more boys or girls with down syndrome. Gender in this case has absolutely no value. The fact is that down syndrome becomes more likely in cases when the mother reached a certain age. This age-thirty-five years. Statistics says that the probability of having a sick child at this age, one to four hundred. After forty-five years, the probability increases again – one to thirty-two. Just note that the age of the father is completely innocent.

Diagnosis is also important for the reason that it can determine the probability that the second child of the same parents with down syndrome. In most cases, the probability is only one percent.

Children with this syndrome lag far behind their peers in development. They can't properly move, speak, can't speak logically.
