Spain became the 16th member of NATO on 30 may 1982 and 20 March 1986, after the referendum began its participation in all committees and working groups, with the exception of the military structure.

  • Emergencies and natural disasters
  • The vulnerability of the Maritime space and critical infrastructure.

To meet the new challenges created by the national security Council, which is responsible for the management of risks and crises that affect national interests and to prevent them.

The Council acts as a collegial body chaired by the government, except when the king attends its meetings.

It involves different ministries, not just those affected by national defence, such as the Ministry of the interior, defense or foreign Affairs, as well as others, such as the development or the industry, because of the importance of communications and infrastructure in the case of national anxiety.

Its functions include the promotion and enforcement of the national security Strategy, the approval of the annual security report, as well as the planning and coordination of security policies.

Air force (IAF)

The Mission of the air force of Spain is the defense of the airspace and the maintenance of international security in peacekeeping operations and humanitarian assistance.

It was founded in the early 20th century. The headquarters is located in Madrid, Moncloa, on the street Romero Robledo.
