Dual citizenship in Russia

Very often people wonder whether to allow dual citizenship in Russia? In this article we will try to explain the concept of "dual citizenship" and how it differs from second citizenship, reveal its essence and difference of the above concepts.

So, according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, Russian citizen can have a foreign citizenship (i.e. dual citizenship) under the conditions prescribed in the Federal law or international Treaty of Russia. In the main law of the country also indicated that, despite the presence of foreign citizenship, the citizen of the Russian Federation shall not be deprived of their rights and freedoms and is not exempt from the consequences of Russian citizenship duties. There are, of course, special cases which are also spelled out in the law.

The Concept of "dual citizenship" in Russia – a special case of multiple nationality. In the system of international law "dual citizenship" is defined as the presence of a person at the same time citizenship of the several States. To date, Russia legalized this question with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, but with regard to the rest of the world, everything is a little bit harder. The thing is, that despite the permission to have a second citizenship and passport, holders of multiple citizenships are not perceived by the authorities of the Russian Federation on the territory of the country as dual citizens. To describe this situation in law introduced the concept of "legal limbo".

As examples, again, take the Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Why is "legal limbo" in relation to this important issue of dual citizenship in Russia? The answer is very simple.

Every country is interested in the taxpayers, and in citizens who will serve in the army. That is why many countries dual citizenship is not encouraged. But to ban it completely as impossible, because in some cases there will be objective circumstances that contribute to the occurrence of such “double” of the citizens. Such circumstances can be attributed to migration. You cannot argue the fact that people are going to live there, where easier and more profitable, and many countries are creating special programs to attract skilled labor from abroad.

We Can conclude that the source of dual citizenship lies in the domestic laws of each country. Dual citizenship in Russia there is only in those cases when in the law there are no points, which prevent the occurrence. Whatever it was, and wealthy citizens can afford obtaining a second passport legally and safely live with two citizenships.
