Gothic architecture began to take shape in the Northern part of modern France and on the territory of modern Switzerland and Belgium around the beginning of the XII century. Then, a little later – in Germany.

The First Gothic structure in architecture is the Church of the monastery of Saint-Denis, near Paris. Built by the Abbot  Sugere, it is a typical Gothic structure with pointed arches. From the Romanesque fortresses she possessed much gracefulness.

In the Gothic style in architecture inherited from the Roman primacy of architecture in the overall system of art and the main types of religious buildings. The art of Gothic special place was occupied by the cathedrals.

Cathedrals built in this style was a higher synthesis of architecture with sculpture and painting. Massive round arch of the Romanesque style was replaced by typical Gothic arches with a pointed top, high and narrow columns and towers, Lancet multicolor stained glass Windows, lavishly decorated façade with an abundance of carved details (pediment ends, tympanum, archivolt). All elements were designed to emphasize the vertical.

Gothic architecture got its name from the Greek “goto”. In antiquity, the Goths were called barbaric tribes invaded the territory of the Roman Empire from the North. According to legend, the term was first used by Raphael.

Symbols of Gothic architecture were the Cathedral and the cross, replacing the lock and the sword of the Romanesque style. For the TWELFTH century are characterized by enormous influence on the religious life.

The Gothic churches were built by the generations. Notre Dame Cathedral was built more than two centuries, the Roman Cathedral from 1211 until the beginning of the XV century, and the Milan – to the XIX.

Gothic architecture  was supposed to symbolize in the temples of the heavenly harmony.  So they created designs which allowed them to overcome the roughness of the stone. It turned a thread in "lace".
