What is Haemophilus influenzae?

The Bacteria that cause Haemophilus infection is called Haemophilus influenzae, or wand Afanasyev-Pfeiffer. There are 6 varieties of this sticks, but the most dangerous is the wand type b. It causes severe disease and further complications. Approximately 85% of adults and 35-40% of children are carriers of Haemophilus influenzae. Quite a high figure, but this is not surprising as Haemophilus influenzae belongs to the category of conditional pathogens, so its presence in the body in small amount is considered normal.

The Highest percentage of carriers of HIB infection is observed in kindergartens, approximately 5%. This disease is airborne, so the risk of Contracting in public areas is quite high. In kindergartens, this infection can be transmitted through household items: dishes, towels and toys. The severity of the disease depends on the number of bacteria ingested. For the relatively small man becomes just a carrier, with a large contact begins to develop the disease. Although wearing the infection goes unnoticed, the slightest weakening of the immune system immediately make himself known serious infectious disease.

Hib vaccine

Haemophilus infection is most common in children from six months to 5 years. The most dangerous age for the development of this disease is from 6 to 12 months, so the drug "ACT-HIB" (the vaccine) in this period are especially needed.

What is the danger of Haemophilus influenzae?

"ACT-HIB" (the vaccine) for a reason highly recommended by pediatricians, because infection with a weakened immune system can cause a number of serious complications, such as:

  • Meningitis - it causes serious brain damage, the percentage of fatal outcome of this disease compared to other high, it is 15%;
  • Epiglottitis - the disease can lead to asphyxia, that is suffocation;
  • Pneumonia - this disease, caused by Haemophilus infection is distinguished by a particularly heavy flow and a high percentage of death;
  • Sepsis - although it occurs infrequently but has serious consequences;
  • Bronchitis - not so dangerous as pneumonia, but is fraught with transition in the chronic form;
  • Otitis media - with severe course facing partial deafness.

This is not to mention the fact that HIB infection is becoming a cause of acute respiratory infections and arthritis. The insidiousness of Haemophilus influenzae is that the initial symptoms in most cases does not cause anxiety in parents. Clinical signs usually become apparent at the onset of complications. Wand type b are particularly resistant to antibiotics, therefore, cause many difficulties in the treatment of Haemophilus influenzae infection (HIB). The vaccine does not guarantee that a child will not develop, but will help to ease the disease.

Vaccine

"ACT-HIB" (the vaccine) produced by the French company "Sanofi Pasteur". It was registered in Russia in 1997 until 2010, the vaccine against HIB infection, was put on a voluntary basis. Only at the end of 2010, due to the high percentage of morbidity was included vaccination calendar on a legal basis.vaccine against Hib infection

"ACT-HIB" vaccine, reviews of which are highly controversial. However, she urged parents with children under the age of 5 years. This is especially true of kids that fall into the following risk groups:

  • Premature babies;
  • Children who are bottle-fed;
  • Children with weakened immune systems, prone to frequent colds;
  • Kids with chronic illnesses which their body can't fight infections;
  • Children who attend public educational institutions.

"ACT-HIB" (vaccine) is pricked not only children but also adults suffering from immunodeficiency.

How does the vaccine?

Haemophilus drug created on the basis of defective antigen attached to the protein molecule of tetanus toxoid. It does not contain the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae type b and therefore cannot cause disease. The combination of antigen with protein have solved several problems:

  • The children had formed a strong immunity to bacteria;
  • Resulting in reduced reactogenicity of the vaccine and make it safer.

Haemophilus influenzae vaccine compared with their counterparts, and their two - vaccine "Hiberix" and "Pentax", has passed more clinical trials whose results are more than satisfactory. It was found that the immunity generated in a child lasts for 4 years. This period is enough, since in the fifth year of life the baby begins to produce the right amount of antibodies against HIB infection.

This kind of vaccination involves notonly personal protection against infection, but also strengthens collective immunity. Ongoing studies have shown that in preschools through vaccination, the morbidity rates have been reduced from 40 to 3.

Vaccination

The Vaccine "ACT-HIB" instruction for the use of which is familiar to every physician, is kids, starting at two months of age. If the initial vaccination done in the first six months of a child's life, the diagram looks like this:

  • The first time vaccination is done at a fixed time;
  • Second time - re-vaccination is carried out 30-45 days;
  • Third time - the last vaccination is appointed a year after the first.
