It owes its fame to divinely wise elders, who, one after another, became the spiritual mentor of several generations of Russians. St. Macarius of Optina was one of them.
The creation Time of Optina is unknown. The crucial step that determined the whole future life, the future elder Macarius of Optina made 6 Oct 1806, having gone on a pilgrimage in the deserts Ploschanskogo rather remote from the village.
