23.09.1896 year French and Belgian Industrialists concluded with the authorities of Tver the agreement on the lease of land for the construction of the Tver railcar factory. The city of Tver, located between Moscow and St. Petersburg, was the perfect place for a new enterprise. Two years later (25.08.1898) Director Lipke was presented with a certificate for the right to work, this date is the birthday of the plant.

At the time of opening it was one of the most advanced production facilities in Russia. With the onset of the twentieth century Tver car-building plant started production of passenger cars of all possible classes: from two-story for immigrants who go to develop Siberia and the Far East to the elegant 26-metre “parlours” for the elite, including the Royal family. The main products were the sleeping cars for high speed trains. In 1915 there was a merger of the Tver and Riga plants.

The October revolution prevented the development plans of the enterprise. In 1918 it was nationalized, and in 1921 – canned. Plant operations resumed in 1925. Instead of two-axle freight wagons started assembling axle, which allowed to significantly increase their capacity.

In 1931, Tver was renamed Kalinin, respectively Tver car-building factory was renamed into Kalinin. A year later, construction began on the huge shop almost a kilometer long, where was subsequently established the Assembly of the rolling stock. By this time the production has employed more than 6,500 employees, and the performance is 10 times higher than in 1913. In 1937, the company produced 418 5736 passenger and heavy freight cars.

War

After the German attack on the Soviet Union, the plant switched to production of purely military products: sanitary trains, ammunition, mortars. Soon, however, the city was occupied by the German army, take out the equipment did not. Most of the shops were destroyed.

03.01.1942 after a successful counter-offensive in the Kalinin was released. Immediately approved the decree on urgent restoration of production. By the autumn of 1943 Kalinin carriage works became one of the largest operating plants in the Central region of the country. It was producing 18 types of products for the front.

Post-war development

Before the war the engineers of the Kalinin (Tver) railcar developed a unique comfortable all-metal passenger cars for long-distance trains. In 1950, the work in this area was resumed and in 1951 the company moved their production.

The Introduction of new products demanded major changes of technological process, quality requirements for welding operations has increased dramatically. For welding arcs the roofs of cars, outdoor flooring and side walls specialists for the first time in the USSR was developed by a special gantry welding machine.

By 1965, the plant was released 11 modifications of passenger cars (instead of one in 1959). On some models for the first time in the practice of the railroad was air conditioned, which was driven from power,produced by special plant, which was part of the train. Such systems were used in the South, mostly – in the Central Asia.

High speed

To the 60-th years there is a question about increasing the speed of movement of trains. In 1965 was built the Express train of a series of “Aurora”. He was able to deliver passengers from Moscow to Leningrad in less than 5 hours – unthinkable for those times speed. However, the specialists did not stop. Together with the scientists developed a construction project of a turbojet train, powered by two aircraft engines.

An Experimental model for many years were tested on routes of General use, developing speed up to 250 km/h. It turned out that he is able to move a lot faster, however, the condition of Railways is not allowed to accelerate above the set limit. The data obtained was then used to design Express RT-200, named “Troika”. Although its operational speed was 200 km/HR, he was also able, ideally, to accelerate to 250 km/h. Today

In the 90 years of the OJSC “Tver car-building plant» suffered from stagnation. The volume of orders has declined repeatedly, however, the factory workers found their market niche: for the first time in its history, began to produce the compartment car, which previously bought in Germany. The first product model 61-820 was introduced in 1993. Gradually warmed up, the demand for traditional products: passenger, postal-Luggage, post, cargo, commercial cars, wheel pairs, etc.

90 years is working on the design and improvement of high-speed cars (over 200 km/h) with a flat valance. To the age-old anniversary of the company in 1998 was made the first sample model 61-4170. The design makes use of new developments:

  • Many processes are automated and controlled from a Central computer;
  • Installed toilets.

Today in the railway sector there has been a rise. The Railways is updating the fleet of locomotives, wagons and machinery. The main responsibility falls on TVZ as an industry leader. In 2008, after years of hard work, started producing rolling stock of new generation. Thanks to the modernization programme performance in recent years has doubled (from 600 cars in the early 2000s, up to 1200 at present).

Since 2009, in cooperation with the Siemens Corporation under development and construction RIC-cars coupe Deluxe convertible salon. These products can be used both on the track of the Russian standard (1520 mm) and European (1435 mm).
